If Josh Beckett's arm isn't healthy it will be a tough series for the Red Sox to win.
Yes, I know there are the baseball playoffs going on, but it's hard to ignore the sheer insanity that was this weekend in football. Oklahoma's #1 ranking went down the toilet with a loss to #5 Texas in a thoroughly entertaining game; #3 Missouri fell to # 17 Oklahoma State, despite getting 390 yards from Heisman contender Chase Daniel. #4 LSU got absolutely waxed by #11 Florida, which featured Florida coach Urban Meyer running up the score yet again, by plugging in a touchdown with two minutes left in a game with a 21 point lead. Completely unnecessary. #7 Texas Tech barely squeaked by an unranked Nebraska team in overtime as well, and previously unbeaten Vanderbilt fell in an upset to Mississippi State. And of course, my Michigan Wolverines proved that they are truly a bad football team, as they fell to the Toledo Rockets. For now, my top 5 is: 1) Alabama; 2) Texas; 3) Penn State; 4) Oklahoma; 5) Florida. Of course, Texas has Missouri this week, and Penn State will be attempting to break a losing streak against Michigan that spans back to 1996, albeit against one of the worst Michigan teams you may ever see. Stay tuned, as more turmoil could be on the way.
And right after the wild and wacky Saturday in college football, we saw a surprising number of last second victories for just one week. Atlanta gave up the lead with 11 seconds left, after Kyle Orton connected for a touchdown, but managed to get the lead back on a Jason Elam field goal as time expired. Houston got a touchdown run by Matt Schaub with 3 seconds left to give them the victory over Miami. The Vikings squeaked by the Lions on a last second field goal by Ryan Longwell. The Rams topped the Redskins on a last second field goal. And, in potentially the most exciting of all the games, the Arizona Cardinals topped the Dallas Cowboys after blowing a 10 point lead in the waning moments only to block a punt and recover it in the end zone for a touchdown in overtime for the win. It was one of the stranger days of the NFL season.
Before moving onto baseball, a quick movie recommendation. I saw Miracle at St. Anna this weekend. It's getting largely weak reviews (Rotten Tomatoes has it at 32% fresh), but I thought it was a very compelling story. To me, the acting and technical aspects of the film are truly well done. My one complaint about the movie, and you should be aware of going in, is the ending. Without revealing any spoilers, it seemed to me as if the movie was beginning to run a little long, and one of Spike Lee's assistants said “Hey Spike, we got to wrap this thing up.” I felt the ending was a little rushed, and perhaps not as compelling as the rest of the movie and story. Still, I thought it was solid, and if not worth racing to the theater, I still think it's a worthwhile movie to see.
And in the baseball world, the Rays pulled through with an absolute must win by topping the Red Sox in Game 2, after dropping the first game. Josh Beckett, yet again, looked like a mere mortal as opposed to his usual playoff self. This has to be a huge concern for the Red Sox going forward, as if Beckett is not on his “A” game, it may be tough for the Sox to repeat. Fortunately for the Sox, they have Jon Lester going against playoff newbie Matt Garza, who was rocked by the White Sox in the Division Series in his first playoff start. Meanwhile, Lester rolls along, with 14 scoreless innings so far in the playoffs, and a 22 2/3 scoreless inning streak stretching back to last season. It's going to be a tough road for the Rays to win this one.
Over in the National League, the Dodgers offense finally woke up on Sunday, as they tagged ageless wonder Jamie Moyer with a five run first inning and never looked back, as they drew the series to 2-1. They will do it again tomorrow night, with Joe Blanton probably facing Derek Lowe on short rest, although it still could be Greg Maddux. Although I do not like what Manny Ramirez did to get out of Boston, I would much rather see the Dodgers head to the World Series than the Phillies. No matter what, I'm still pulling for the Rays.
By next week's column, we'll have a World Series pairing. Next week's Grumble will have my awards ceremony. See you next time.
