The Grumble -- November 20, 2008

  Terrell Owens
Are we seeing the beginning of the decline of Terrell Owens?

In an NFL season where only two teams stand up out of 32, and we still have a winless team at this point for the second season in a row, what can we exactly be sure of? Has Brett Favre, after two straight turnover-less games, really turned over a new leaf? Can we truly depend on playing him against the undefeated Titans? And what about the return of Tony Romo? Sure, it probably means more wins for the Cowboys, but what about your fantasy team?

First of all, Favre has had his success against the lowly Rams, and a suspect Patriots defense. Still, something tells me this success is here to stay. But Tony Romo playing with a covered up pinkie, I'm not so sure.

Anyone who was waiting for Romo’s return to put Terrell Owens into their line-up, probably made the mistake of starting him against the Redskins, and they more than likely paid for it. Owens has had five catches in three straight games, but hasn't topped 40 yards in those five games. That, and only one score over that span, as well. While his production is sure to rise with Romo's return, the question remains-just how much should we expect? At 35, this might be a small sign that Owens is on the decline. How smart is Jerry Jones looking for making the deal that made Roy Williams a Cowboy, now?

As I dive into this week's good starts and sits, take note-Owens and Romo aren't going to blow you away, even if they are facing the 49ers. Because, whether you'd like to believe it or not, Mike Singletary is slowly righting the ship in Frisco', and should continue doing so against a seemingly average Dallas team.

Oh, and about Favre; play him. I know, I know. I've been backing him all season long, and he really hasn't been paying off, but I really get the feeling that his team, along with all of New York, is completely behind him. That kind of backing will boost his 38-year old confidence, and will lead to solid results the rest of the way. I can't guarantee the Jets will win the division or make the playoffs (even though I really think they will), but I can safely say Favre is back where we expected him to be. And when I say "we", I mean the people who like Favre, and not the bandwagon jumpers who hated him even during all of last season's success.

Two quick notes:

Steven Jackson is expected to be out for this week's game, which means everything has gone to hell in St. Louis, and not a single offensive player on that team is worth starting. However, see below to see if there is anyone worth keeping an eye on.

Earnest Graham's bum ankle likely has him missing the rest of the season, which means possible big-time action for Warrick Dunn, and opens the door for Carnell Williams. Neither will carry your team, but they could help fill-in for a game or two if you’re in a bind.

With all that said, here's a look at each of next week's match-ups, who to play, and who to keep on your bench:

Does anyone plan on watching this Thursday's likely debacle between the lowly Bengals and the sloppy Steelers? Because I sure don't. The only player, and I do mean only player, that I like in this match-up is Willie Parker. He had another solid showing last week, and as long as he's a lock to play, he should be in your line-up. Big Ben isn't fully healthy, shouldn't be playing, and in no way offers you enough as a fantasy starter to be in your line-up, right now. You'd be much better off with Tyler Thigpen, even if he is facing the Buffalo Bills. T.J. Houshmandzadeh is the only Bengals player worth mentioning, and don't even think about Cedric Benson. If last week's poor showing wasn't enough evidence, just look at any running back that has gone up against Pittsburgh this season. Yeah, that means don't play him.

Much like the game just mentioned, the Ravens and Eagles will surely provide us with enough ugly plays that we’ll be begging to see last week's Cincinnati and Philly' game again. Baltimore's pass defense can be had, which renders Donovan McNabb and Kevin Curtis playable, but if you have other even remotely decent options, this is the week to use them. Outside of maybe Derrick Mason, and that's a big maybe, no other Ravens player deserves a shot this week. Willis McGahee isn't a horrible play, but the Eagles run defense is too good.

Dallas should be able to move the ball well enough on San Francisco, but it probably won't be through the air. Marion Barber is primed for another big day, while Tony Romo will still be dropping passes off underneath (He had zero plays over 20 yards against the Redskins'). I don't like anyone outside of Jason Witten for the air attack. Frank Gore will be the Niners' only shot at offensive success, and if you're desperate at tight end, Vernon Davis could find the rock in the red-zone, assuming Shaun Hill can get the offense that far down field.

Jeff Garcia made the Vikings defensive front run around like turkeys with their heads lopped off, so what do you think he'll do against the Lions? To put it softly, Detroit won't get their first win this week, and Garcia could have his best game of the year. Yeah, over 300 yards and a whopping two touchdowns will count as his best game. Wow. I know, awesome, right? Daunte Culpepper has looked decent, but that doesn't mean you should play him. His okay play so far does mean you can play Calvin Johnson, though. Oh, and since Earnest Graham is out, Warrick Dunn could have a big day. Switch that “could” with “should” and play the guy. He's 33, but the guy can still run.

Bernard Berrian hasn't done a whole lot recently, so look for him to go off against Jacksonville. Both teams are in a must-win situation, so run with the guys who have the better all-around offense. If Matt Jones is available, he should be a dependable WR3, while both Jaguars backs are difficult to rely on. However, a yardage debate aside, Maurice Jones Drew has been scoring at will. That shouldn't stop this week.

Even though the Browns look like a pancake defense on paper, I still wouldn't recommend playing Sage Rosenfels against them. Actually, the way he's been playing, I'd suggest dropping him altogether. Steve Slaton is a legit RB1 now, even if Ahman Green is stealing touchdowns from him. Braylon Edwards continues to drop big passes, but Brady Quinn likes throwing to him, and the Texans aren't great against the pass. Basically, all Browns offensive players have a shot at a big day.

The Patriots are going up against the Dolphins again, with huge division implications, and it probably isn't a great match-up for Matt Cassel or Randy Moss. You can probably start Moss, regardless, but Cassel is due for a bad game, and this might be the stage for it. Don't expect Chad Pennington to have the success that Favre had against them last week. Instead, ride either Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams. Both backs have been playing very well.

Trent Edwards has really been in a slump since his head bumpin' at the hands of the Cardinals, but the Chiefs should provide a cure for what ails him. Marshawn Lynch has played extremely well; so don't hesitate to start him, either. I know he's not winning games for the Chiefs, but Tyler Thigpen has gained a fine grasp of the Chief's spread offense. Thigpen is a solid play this week, and the same remains for Dwayne Bowe and Tony Gonzalez, as the Bills secondary is beat up and on life support.

As I said before, any Rams players are so untouchable; it's not even funny. It may have been funny a few weeks ago, but the joke that is the St. Louis Rams has run its course. Simply avoid players from that team. On the other hand, you have the Chicago Bears, where Kyle Orton and the passing offense will be looking for a huge rebound game after their no-show at Lambeau Field. Matt Forte has established himself as a legitimate RB1 with his consistent production.

The Titans may end up cruising to an 11-0 start, but I get the feeling Brett Favre and the Jets will give them one heck of a fight. With that said, all Jets players are a fringe play. As for Tennessee, I haven't been satisfied with their running game lately, and there's reason to think their woes won't stop against the Jets. Thinking back to last year with the Patriots passing game, you may recall that teams began to figure their offense out, and get to the quarterback. The same is starting to happen to the Titans, which will likely force Kerry Collins into throw-happy mode for the third straight game, and leave him vulnerable to the Jets formidable pass rush.

I don't feel I need to say this, but you shouldn't even own an Oakland player; seriously, not a single player. The Broncos should have a field day against them, but not necessarily through the air. Oakland's pass defense has been their lone bright spot this season, and they could stop Denver's solid duo from going off. If Peyton Hillis gets the nod for the second straight week, he'd be a great flex play, but still hovers just below a solid RB2, considering his status as the starter.

The Seahawks have been playing better recently, and with Jason Campbell's poor play of late, this could be the upset of the week (unless the Jets get it done). I still can't trust Matt Hasselbeck, or any Seattle player, for that matter, but something tells me they could grind it out against Washington. If Campbell can't get it done this week, he probably won't do much the rest of the season.

The Giants are great, but they're the type of team that runs the ball and stays extremely focused. Which means if they look past the Cardinals, even for a minute, they might get blown out of the water. Tim Hightower should not be played against the solid run defense, but everyone else in Arizona is still a fine start. Kurt Warner can't be stopped.

Anyone for Carolina and Atlanta is a pretty tough call, but I think you're pretty safe with DeAngelo Williams. Stay away from Jake Delhomme until he passes for over 100 yards in a game again, but still play Steve Smith, as he's the main target. I like Matt Ryan, but not against this defense, which means Michael Turner will be used more than ever.

Believe it or not, the Colts offense is back, and just hitting it's stride. The Chargers have the type of defense that can shut any team down on any given day, but are far from consistent. Their secondary is solid, but won't contain Reggie Wayne. In fact, since they'll be so busy with Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez, Dallas Clark should be open all day underneath. Last week's explosion from Joseph Addai is just the beginning for a reborn Colts running game. Philip Rivers has really dropped his play in recent weeks, and the same can be said for the rest of San Diego's offense. If Bob Sanders is out for Indy', LT could have his first huge day of the year. And by huge, I mean HUGE.

There's something about playing under the lights that brings out the best in Reggie Bush, but that only matters if he plays. A.J. Hawk's switch to middle linebacker seems to have jump-started this Packers defense, at least for one week, and the Saints pass-happy offense should be at least a little scared. Drew Brees should still have a field day against their defense, but it will likely be in a come-from-behind effort. This means big days for Lance Moore and Marques Colston. Aaron Rodgers would normally be a solid play, but I get the feeling Green Bay will run the resurgent Ryan Grant wild. Greg Jennings is still likely to hook up with Rodgers for at least one or two big plays.

Once again, I'll be available in the forums if you need any help, and will try to assist you up until Saturday night. Otherwise, you can e-mail me at kevin.roberts@cuw.edu, where I can field your questions or comments up until game day.
