The top college football athlete? Not so fast...
|
Conference championships are looming and the
bowl season is just around the corner.
The BCS rankings have been like a merry-go-round since the first
rankings were released. The only thing
constant this year is the play of a select few magnificent athletes. With that said, here are the top ten
athletes in college football this year.
10. Colt Brennan-QB-Hawaii
Colt Brennan’s numbers are gaudy,
his poise is just as amazing, and he has Hawaii nationally ranked. Even with the stats and poise there are
still questions. Brennan has had one of
the softest schedules in all of college football. We will have to wait till the bowl season to find the answer to
that question, since the WAC doesn’t have the defenses of the SEC or even the Big East. If Brennan plays big in a
bowl game against a solid defense, look for Brennan to be in the draft
discussion with Matt Ryan.
9. Mike Hart-RB-Michigan
Mike Hart has been a tremendous
leader for the Wolverines this season.
Without Harts play on offense Michigan would never have been able to
keep themselves in the Rose Bowl hunt.
Hart will be a solid back at the next level due to his ability to hold
on to the ball. With almost 1,000
rushing attempts in his college career Hart still has not fumbled. Hart is small only in physical measurements;
there is NO measurement to state the size of this senior tailback’s
“Hart”.
8. Todd
Boeckman-QB-Ohio State
Todd Boeckman has flown under the
radar until right now. Boeckman in his
first year as a starter had the Buckeye offense moving like a well-oiled
machine. With numbers comparable to
Matt Ryan, Boeckman has managed to stay unbeaten. As a junior he finds himself near the top of all the passing
categories in the country. Boeckman
should stay for his senior year to better ready himself for the next level.
7. Glenn
Dorsey-DT-Louisiana State
Glenn Dorsey’s big frame and brute
strength has made him the anchor of the LSU defensive line. Dorsey’s ability to eat up blocks makes
lanes for the linebackers to make clean tackles. On passing downs the 300 pound tackle consistently finds his way
into the backfield to disrupt the offense and record the occasional sack. Dorsey’s play this year has him in the
running for the Vince Lombardi Award, Outland Trophy, and the Chuck Bednarik
Trophy. Glenn Dorsey will be picked
early in the up coming NFL draft this spring.
6. Tom
Zbikowski-SS-Notre Dame
Zbikowski’s complete disregard for
his and opponents body makes him one fiercest tacklers in the country. The Irish senior captain has the speed to
cover receivers and is always looking to jump a route. Along with the speed Zbikowski is capable of
delivering a bone-crushing hit that will force the ball loose, leaving even the
toughest ball carrier in a daze.
Zbikowski has the explosiveness to return punts and spring one for a
touchdown at a moments notice. His all
around ability has put him at the top of many national awards around the
country. I look forward to seeing him
play on Sundays in the near future.
5. Matt Ryan-QB-Boston College
This season Matt Ryan has been poise, accurate, and has showed tremendous arm strength. His comeback against Virginia Tech was both clutch and Tom Brady like. His two
touchdown passes late in the game put him on everyone’s draft board. Ryan has
all the tools of a NFL quarterback and he has the durability. Ryan’s numbers also have him listed at the
top of everyone’s Heisman Trophy list.
If BC runs the table and finishes with one loss this year; look for Ryan
to go high in the first round this year.
Ryan’s numbers also have him listed at the top of everyone’s Heisman
Trophy list.
4. Brian Brohm-QB-Louisville
Brian Brohm is a traditional
pocket passer that moves only to avoid the rush. The Cardinals senior quarterback has showed with his consistent
ability to be accurate, poise under pressure, and intelligence that he is ready
to read NFL defenses. The precision
passing attack of Cardinals relies completely on Brohm’s decision-making
ability. Every snap he takes whether in
practice or in a game situation puts him one step closer to being the next
Peyton Manning.
3. Patrick
White-QB-West Virginia
Pat White’s ability to score both
through the air and on the ground makes him one of the most dangerous athletes
in college football. Even though White
probably wont be a successful signal caller at the next level, his other
abilities will have him playing on Sundays.
At six foot two and blazing speed, he could find his way into a lineup
as a slot receiver in the NFL. This
junior Mountaineer is in the running for the Heisman Trophy, but like last
years winner Troy Smith, he will be on the draft board till the later rounds of
day two if he chooses to come out a year early.
2. Darren
McFadden-RB-Arkansas
Darren McFadden shares the body
type and running style of the explosive rookie sensation Adrian Peterson of
Minnesota Vikings. Last year's Heisman
runner up and this year’s probable runner up again will go very early in the draft this year should he choose to waive his senior year at Arkansas. After scorching the Gamecock defense for a record-tying 321 yard on Saturday he finds himself in the front running for other top awards like the Maxwell.
1. Dennis
Dixon-QB-Oregon
Dennis Dixon is on a collision course for a podium in New York City at the Heisman Presentation show. Dixon’s play this year has everyone thinking about Mike Vick's play in his last year at Virginia Tech. His scrambling ability forces defenses to put an extra man in the box, but his passing ability is capable beating you deep. How do you defend this kid; well no one has been able to yet this year. Dixon is capable of making ridiculous ball fakes to freeze the secondary and if no one bites on the fake he will take off for ten yard or more. Dixon may slide a little in the draft only because he isn’t a pocket passer, but I am still excited to see what he can do next year.
