FANTASY INSIGHT: The wins have signed center fielder Denard Span to a five-year, $16.5 million contract extension. The agreement includes a $9 million team option for 2015.
Span became the Twins' everyday center fielder when they traded Carlos Gomez to Milwaukee in the offseason. The 26-year-old Span, a product of Tampa (Fla.) Catholic High School, is one of five Minnesota regulars that the team drafted out of high school and watched blossom into big leaguers. (AP)

FANTASY INSIGHT: The Colorado Rockies and Todd Helton agreed on Thursday to a two-year, $9.9 million contract extension that runs through the 2013 season.
The first baseman also agreed to defer $13.1 million of his $19 million salary in 2011 over a 10-year period beginning in 2014, the team said. (AP)

FANTASY INSIGHT: Twins P Joe Nathan was diagnosed with what was termed a "significant tear" to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
To repair it would require Tommy John surgery and he would miss the 2010 season, but Nathan will not immediately opt for that. Instead, he will rest and rehab, working to build up the elbow over the next week or two. After that time period, Nathan will make a determination if he can pitch with the injury or will need an operation to repair the tear. (MLB.com)

FANTASY INSIGHT: The Boston Red Sox claimed him off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on March 1, and the Toronto Blue Jays claimed him off waivers on Thursday.
Spots in the Blue Jays bullpen are wide open and Fien, up briefly with the Tigers last year, has a shot if he can impress Toronto manager Cito Gaston. He was listed as a back-up pitcher for Sunday’s game in case extra innings or other situations dictated a need. (MLive.com)

FANTASY INSIGHT: The Blue Jays have placed pitcher Scott Richmond on the 60-day disabled list and claimed Casey Fien off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.
Fien, 26, pitched in nine games for the Detroit Tigers last year and was 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in 11.1 innings.
Richmond, a right-hander, is sidelined with right shoulder impingement. (Canadian Press)

FANTASY INSIGHT: Mets shortstop Jose Reyes plans to undergo tests in New York after doctors in Florida discovered a thyroid imbalance, the team said Friday.
Reyes will have tests on Monday and it could take up to 48 after for doctors to receive the results. Reyes is not expected to take part in any physical activity while he is gone. (AP)

FANTASY INSIGHT: Aaron Boone has ended his 12-year major league career and will become a baseball analyst for ESPN.
He announced his retirement on Tuesday, saying it was "a privilege and honor" to have playedfor six different clubs in the majors.
Boone was a member of the Houston Astros in 2009, when he is believed to have been the first player to return to Major League Baseball after open-heart surgery. (AP)

The deal, which includes a no-trade clause and no deferred money, is pending a physical. Damon, 36, has no history of injuries.
