  Jeff Clement
Jeff Clement is back for another shot at the majors. The kid can flat out rake, sp grab him if you can.

Welcome back for another look of the most noteworthy transactions of the previous week. We begin in San Diego, where the Padres finally called up top prospect Chase Headley to fill in at left field and, while Kevin Kouzmanoff is banged up, at third base. Headley was batting .305 in Triple A, with 13 home runs in 259 at bats. He performed reasonably solid in his first six games with the big club, batting .292 with two home runs this week, and is someone to keep an eye on. Even with Kouzmanoff due back from injury any day now, Headley will find time in the outfield. Definitely pick him up in NL-Only leagues, and his potent bat is even worth a look in deep mixed leagues.

In other top prospect news, Jeff Clement, the #42 prospect on Baseball America's pre-season top 100 list, was finally called up to replace the woeful Kenji Johjima as the Mariners catcher. Clement was batting .337 with 14 home runs in 172 at-bats at AAA, and hit a home run today, after failing to get a hit in his first few games. Clement is a legit prospect that can be picked up in AL-Only leagues immediately. For mixed leagues, you may want to let him establish himself before racing to the waiver wire.

On a more experienced note, the Marlins designated Jacque Jones for assignment, after he went 4-37 in limited appearances since his signing. Jones has now struggled in both the American and National Leagues in 2008, and it would appear that his days as a productive major leaguer have long since passed. Even if someone gives him another shot, it looks like it would be okay to ignore him.

Cincinnati Reds top prospect Homer Bailey was called up a few weeks ago, and did absolutely nothing to warrant staying, going 0-3, with an 8.76 earned run average in just over 12 innings pitched. More disturbing than the earned run average numbers is the fact that in 12 innings, Bailey only struck out three batters, while walking an atrocious 10. He will head back to the Triple A club at Louisville, and he may not get another major league call-up this year. If you have a minor league reserve roster, stash Bailey there, as he is still only 23 years old, but in terms of major league production, Bailey does not appear to be a good bet for 2008.

The Atlanta Braves finally activated Mike Gonzalez from the disabled list, as he returns from Tommy John surgery. Gonzalez was thrust right back into the closer role earlier this week, collecting a save against the Texas Rangers. He had a rough go of it on Sunday against the Mariners, as Jeff Clement launched a home run off of Gonzalez. Manny Acosta has struggled in recent weeks, so the job is Gonzalez' for the taking. Although he is bound to have some ups and downs in his comeback from surgery, the opportunity for saves makes him worthwhile in mixed leagues, as well as NL-Only leagues.

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Hiroki Kuroda on the disabled list with shoulder soreness. This comes on the heels of the Dodgers placing Brad Penny on the disabled list as well. With the Dodgers rotation currently in shambles, relying on pitchers such as Eric Stults, Chan Ho Park and the rookie Clayton Kershaw, and with Jason Schmidt still not ready to return from his injuries, one player who could get a look is James McDonald. McDonald is currently pitching for Double A, Jacksonville, and making quite a name for himself, with a 3.52 earned run average, and 79 strikeouts in 79 1/3 innings pitched. He also has only walked 25 batters. Since the Dodgers Triple A ballpark in Las Vegas is known as a hitter's haven, it would not be unreasonable for McDonald to skip Triple A and get a call directly to the majors soon enough. He will not be worth picking up in mixed leagues, but in NL-Only leagues, he could provide a nice boost for your pitching staff.

Finally, Jeff Keppinger has been sent on a rehabilitation assignment, and should be returning to Cincinnati before long. Jerry Hairston, also returning soon, played fairly solid in Keppinger's absence, but Keppinger should be given back his starting role upon his return. Keppinger has a great eye, and is a good bet to provide a .300 average, although it probably will not come with any pop.

I will be on vacation for the next two weeks. Good luck making it through the All-Star Break, and I will see you upon my return.
