MINNESOTA TWINS
NOTES: Most fantasy owners are hoping that
Matt Garza gets the call soon, but Carlos Silva and Ramon Ortiz are doing what they can to keep Garza in the
minors.Silva allowed one run in his
first start, while Ortiz allowed two runs in seven innings.Fellow starter Sidney Ponson will make his first start Monday.
INJURIES: Rondell White is
day-to-day with a sore calf.
Player Watch: Jeff
Cirillo has
a chance to see a lot of at-bats this season between third base and DH.He resurrected his career as mostly a
pinch-hitter last season, but he is seeing lots of at-bats against lefties and
should get some spot starts against right-handed pitchers.
Prospect Watch: Third base prospect Matt Moses is starting the year at
Triple-A, but he needs to make major progress in order to
get a call-up this season.Moses is only
22-years-old, but he struggled to hit in the minors last season. The former first-round pick still has plenty
of potential and is young enough to rebound after last season.
NEW YORK YANKEES
NOTES: Outfielder Melky Cabrera will receive plenty of at-bats with Hideki Matsui going on the DL.Cabrera had a breakout season last year and
could be valuable for the short-term in most leagues if he is able to play as
well as he did last season.
INJURIES: Johnny Damon is
likely to return to the starting lineup Monday after missing time with a sore
calf.Hideki Matsui was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained
hamstring.
Player Watch: Josh Phelps is settling in as the Yankees' regular first baseman
against lefties.The former top prospect
with Toronto had done very little in
the majors since his rookie season, but he could be a
speculative spot pickup in AL-only leagues.
Prospect Watch: Former top third base
prospect Eric Duncan has gotten off
to a hot start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with two home runs.He is still not considered to be a very good
prospect and obviously does not have a future at third base with the Yankees
this season, but he could be good trade bait later in the season.
OAKLAND A's
NOTES: The injury bug has plagued the A's early in
the season.Mark Kotsay, Dan Johnson and
Esteban Loaiza went down in spring
training.Milton Bradley and Bobby
Crosby already missed time during the first week of the season. However, for now the time is probably just happy that Rich Harden is healthy and throwing well.
INJURIES: Dan Johnson (hip) got some good news and could return as
early as late April. There is still no
clear of when Esteban Loaiza (neck) will return, but he could be back in late
April as well.

Player Watch: Dan Haren owners have to be very frustrated.Haren has a 0.69 ERA after two starts, but he
has two losses already to show for his performances. He will hopefully find some better luck soon.
Prospect Watch: First base prospect Daric Barton has gotten off to a strong
start at Triple-A Sacramento, hitting .417 with a home run during the first
week.Barton still needs to work on his
defense, which has led many to believe that Mike Piazza is just a placeholder at DH
for Barton's arrival in 2008.
SEATTLE MARINERS
NOTES: Miguel Batista's first start with the Mariners was not pretty, as
he allowed eight runs in 4.2 innings against Oakland.Batista had a 4.80 ERA as a starter two years ago in the AL, but the
Mariners are hoping that he will fare better in a larger home ballpark. So far, the results are not pretty.
INJURIES: None.
Player Watch: Young ace Felix Hernandez absolutely dominated
the A's on Opening Day, leading some to wonder whether this season is his
breakout year.The Mariners have said
that they will no longer baby Hernandez's arm like they did last season, so he
should at least be expected to throw more innings this season if he can stay
healthy.
Prospect Watch: Former first-round pick
Jeff Clement is starting the year at
Triple-A Tacoma.Clement struggled with
injuries last season, and Kenji Johjima is clearly in the way at catcher. It is unclear what the Mariners will do about
this situation, but Clement needs more minor league experience before the
Mariners have to decide.
TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS
NOTES: Among the players with great first
weeks for the young Devil Rays was outfielder Elijah Dukes.Dukes hit a home run in each of his first two
career starts, solidifying his major league spot. The Devil Rays may still have some trouble finding Dukes regular
at-bats, but he is looking like a good pickup in AL-only leagues.
INJURIES: Rocco Baldelli missed
some time during the first week with a hamstring injury, but he was back in
the lineup at DH Sunday.
Player Watch: The Devil Rays seem to
have found their closer in Al Reyes.Reyes converted his first save chance of the
season without incident, and the D'Rays seem to have confidence in him. There is no reason why he should be available
in fantasy leagues.
Prospect Watch: Starter Jeff Niemann allowed two runs in five
innings and struck out seven during his first start of the season at
Triple-A.At this point, Niemann is far
and away the Devil Rays' best pitching prospect in the high minors, and he
could get a rotation spot soon with the way Tampa's rotation pitched
during the first week of the season.
TEXAS RANGERS
NOTES: Robinson Tejeda did
something in his first start of the season that he has struggled with during
his major league career: Throw
strikes.He played to contact and
allowed only three walks and two hits in seven scoreless innings.Tejeda has an excellent arm and needs
to get more than one strikeout per start to remain successful, but the first
outing was promising.
INJURIES: Eric Gagne is
scheduled to come off the DL and take the closer reins by next weekend.
Player Watch: Young outfielder Nelson Cruz could really struggle to
find at-bats if he does not start to play better soon.He is hitting only .231 with six strikeouts
through the first week of the season, while Sammy Sosa already has his first home run of the season.
Prospect Watch: If Cruz continues to
struggle, don't rule out a call-up for Victor
Diaz.The Mets' former outfielder of
the future is far from the prospect that he was a couple years ago, but he
still has the pop to carve out a role for himself in the majors.AL-only owners with deep benches could make a
speculative play.
TORONTO BLUE JAYS
NOTES: Casey Janssen picked up an early-season save, but fantasy owners
should not put too much into the stat.Closer B.J. Ryan had pitched
on back-to-back days, so Janssen was left in for two innings.Janssen is not even Toronto's main setup man, so he is unlikely
to have fantasy value unless he gets a rotation spot later this season.
INJURIES:Troy Glaus should return to the lineup early this week after missing
time with a sore heel.
Player Watch: Jason Smith has struggled to draw walks during his career, so it is
somewhat surprising that the Blue Jays are carrying him on their roster.Smith did hit five home runs in less than 100
at-bats last season for Colorado, but overall he is by
no means an asset offensively.
Prospect Watch: John-Ford Griffin is no longer considered to be a prospect, but he
has gotten off to a very hot start in Triple-A with a .462 average and two home
runs.Griffin is pretty much limited
to DH because of his poor outfield defense, but a continued hot streak could
get him another significant call-up at some point this season.
