NEW YORK
YANKEES
Hitters:
2B Robinson Cano didn’t have a
single walk in the first eight games of the season, he now has four in the last
two. That’s a great sign as it indicates
Cano is being more selective at the plate.
Aside from his batting average (.333), his other numbers thus far are pretty
empty making Cano a great buy low candidate as the power numbers will
undoubtedly rebound.
Pitchers:
Attention all Chien Ming Wang
owners, brighter days are on the way. The right hander didn't allow a hit over
five scoreless innings in an extended spring training game Saturday. It was his
first outing since he hurt his right hamstring while running on March 23. He is
scheduled to pitch in another minor league game Thursday and might rejoin the
Yankees' rotation for a start on April 24 at Tampa Bay.
The important thing right now is that Wang appears to be recovering nicely from
his injury.
OAKLAND
ATHELTICS
Hitters:
3B Eric Chavez connected for his
first home run of the season, a |
Eric Chavez is just one of the nine light hitting Oakland A's starters
|
two-run shot against the Yankees Friday. He
also went 2-4 the following night. That's
a great sign for the A's, who need a productive season out of Chavez because he
bats fifth and can provide protection for cleanup man Mike Piazza. Chavez is known as a historically slow starter, so to
see him doing well early on could be a good sign for Fantasy owners. He remains
a must-start in all AL-only Fantasy leagues and most mixed formats as well
Pitchers:
Manager Bob Geren told the Contra Costa
Times that RHP Chad Gaudin could
remain in the A's rotation even after Esteban
Loaiza returns from the DL. Gaudin
will start Tuesday against the Angels, with the A's choosing to skip Joe Kennedy early next week. AL-only
owners should be all over this as Gaudin is now worth starting as a back-of-the
rotation starter for Fantasy Week 3 (April 16-22). Another solid start would
help his job security a ton.
SEATTLE
MARINERS
Hitters:
Here’s a startling tidbit, OF Ichiro Suzuki
has seven strikeouts and only one hit in his last 17 at-bats. The Mariner
hiiters have been unable to put any type of consistency together due to the
multiple snow/rain outs the team has endured this season thus far. Even so, it's
very odd to see Ichiro having so much difficulty. Suzuki is in a contract year,
so he is motivated to have his best year in the majors. He remains a high-end
Fantasy OF, one worth starting in all formats despite the slow start.
Pitchers: RHP Jeff Weaver
already shows signs of being a pitcher that doesn't trust his stuff -- or his
defense. He nibbles around the strike zone way too much, seemingly trying to
make the perfect pitch ever time. The result deep counts resulting in the
defense playing on its heels.
Until
he grasps the idea of throwing first-pitch strikes, he'll be just as
ineffective with the Mariners as he was with the Angels last season.
TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS
Hitters:
Since starting the season 4-11 (.364), OF Elijah
Dukes has cooled considerably and is starting to play himself out of the
starting lineup and onto the bench. Dukes struck out four times Saturday night
against the Twins. He has just one hit in his last 20 at-bats. Dukes has been
seeing a majority of the time at DH so as long as he is in the lineup, he
remains a must-start in all AL-only Fantasy leagues.
Pitchers:
Aside from LHP Scott Kazmir, there’s
not a heck of a lot to like about the Devil Rays starting rotation. Kazmir won
his first game of the season Friday night in impressive form, outduelling Johan Santana of all people. He allowed
two runs in eight innings (113 pitches), striking out six and walking none. The
only blemish on this start was the fact Kazmir allowed another home run. He has
allowed four of them in three starts this season. Overall, you should be very
pleased to own Kazmir and is a must start in all formats regardless of the
matchup.
TEXAS
RANGERS
Hitters: 1B Mark Teixeira is off to another
slow start; 9-39 (.231) with no |
Teixeira is off to another slow start. It's time to sway the owner of the Rangers' first baseman to trade
|
homers and only one RBI. Tex
is getting few good pitches to hit and has only one extra-base hit (double) thus
far. It doesn’t help that Sammy Sosa
and Hank Blalock, who bat behind
Teixeira, are struggling as well. Keep in mind that Teixeira struggled early
last season as well and then posted a monster 2nd half (.291, 24
HRs, 69 RBIs) so stick with him.
Pitchers:
After an impressive outing against the Red Sox where he went seven innings
while only giving up two hits for the win, RHP Robinson Tejeda imploded to the the tune of six runs allowed on 10
hits over five innings against the Devil Rays. He did however strike out four
and walk only one. Consider Tejeda a nice bounce back candidate this week as he
starts at the White Sox next Wednesday.
TORONTO
BLUEJAYS
Hitters:
Last season, 2B Aaron Hill struggled
out of the gate, posting a .195 batting average in April for the Jays. The
25-year-old infielder has enjoyed a better start this year, and he credits the
time he's spent in the batting cage with Toronto
hitting coach Mickey Brantley. The result has been more line drives and lots of
confidence. Hill has batted sixth, seventh or eighth this season, which isn't
that great for fantasy owners. However, if Troy
Glaus misses more time with his heel injury, Hill could be introduced to a
higher lineup spot. The way he's hitting now, and the way he hit to finish
September last year makes him a bonafide mixed league pickup.
Pitchers:
The Blue Jays placed closer B.J. Ryan
on the 15-day DL on Sunday with an elbow injury, a day after he blew his second
save in his past four chances. Ryan, whose latest blown save came in Saturday's
10-7 loss to Detroit, is to be examined by Dr.
James Andrews in Alabama
on Monday. Dr. James Andrews is usually the bearer of bad news, especially with
elbow issues. The left-hander has two blown saves in five chances this year,
after he blew only four saves in 42 opportunities last season. Setup man Jason Frasor will take over in the
closer's role.
