Chris Duffy, Outfield, Pittsburgh Pirates
Duffy is owned in less than 10 percent of traditional formats. He recorded five stolen bases in both April and May and already has three the month of June. He's also been hitting the ball better lately, with a .282 batting average in June. He has stolen bases at every level he has competed at and at 27 years-of-age he should have plenty of gas left.
Corey Hart, Outfield, Milwaukee Brewers
In that young and talented Brewers lineup, Hart should not be forgotten. The teams new leadoff hitter has played significantly better of late, and so far this season has 11 stolen bases. At the age of 25 he will only get more effecient on the basepaths. With the talent surrounding him in the potent Brewers lineup Hart will be giving the chance to run moving forward.
Tony Gwynn, Outfield, Milwaukee Brewers
Son of the Padres great, Tony Gwynn, Junior is not owned outside of NL-only formats or mixed leagues with 14 or more owners. However, that does not mean you should shy away from this talent. First, he has the ability to steal. In the minors, Gwynn had seasons of 34, 34, and 30 stolen bases. Second, he is the son of Tony Gwynn – I said that before, right? So you know he has the genes to be a big time hitter. The deep Brewers outfield has limited Gwynn's plate appearances this year (83 at-bats). However, if someone such as Geoff Jenkins (always an injury risk) or Bill Hall were to go down, Gwynn's stock would spike dramatically.
Hunter Pence, Outfield, Houston Astros
Pence never really got the chance to run in the minor leagues, but he has all-around great talent and is a five-tool player. He is the best player we are talking about today, so there is a better chance of his not being available. If he is available though, he is a must pickup because of his ability to do anything. In just 42 games this season, he has five home runs, 25 RBI, and five steals. Pence will certainly get on base on a regular basis, giving him many more chances to flash that speed.
Ryan Theriot, Second Base, Chicago Cubs
Theriot has dropped off considerably since his early season surprise. He has since been buried at the bottom of the Cubs batting order, which does not help since that team cannot really hit anyway. Theriot does have 11 stolen bases though, and three just in the past week. He is a solid add for anyone needing speed and his middle infield position is usually more lacking for speed than outfield.
Norris Hopper, Outfield, Cincinnati Reds
Hopper has seen his playing time diminish since his early season charge. He has seen his batting average drop from .329 to .281 in the past two weeks and has just one stolen base in that time. There are better options available, like Duffy or Hart, but considering the Reds injury-riddled team history, Hopper could see more playing time in the near future. He is definitely one to keep an eye on. Hooper has five stolen bases in 42 games, but he does have plenty of speed, and the potential is certainly there for more.
Next week, we will take a look at the NL East speedsters.
