29. Ted Lilly – Chicago Cubs (31 years old)Lilly was brought in to provide some stability to a Cubs rotation that has been devastated by injuries and inexperience since the end of 2003. One the one hand, Lilly does have a solid track record as a guy who will strikeout just under eight batters per nine while getting you ten or more wins. On the other hand, he’s also a fly ball pitcher who averages 1.38 HR/9 and while giving up an average of 3.67 walks per nine. That’s a deadly combination for a guy moving to Wrigley field.

30. Ian Snell – Pittsburgh Pirates (24 years old)Snell is a very nice sleeper candidate for the 2007 season. His ratios will scare some off, but his peripherals present a guy who is going to be very productive once he settles down against Major League hitters. In his first full season with the Pirates he racked up 169 strikeouts, but he has to get his walks and homeruns allowed down. Of the next generation of Pirates hurlers, Gorzelanny has the best stuff, and Duke has the best makeup; but when it’s all said and done Snell could very well be the best of the bunch.

31. Clay Hensley – San Diego Padres (27 years old)Hensley has potential to be a very solid pitcher in for the long term, particularly if he stays in San Diego. He keeps the hits and the homeruns allowed at manageable levels, but his walk and strikeout rates need to improve before he’ll see any significant jump in fantasy value. As it stands he’s a nice pitcher that seems to pitch to contact, letting his defense make plays. There’s value in that, but the buzz doesn’t match the results to date.

32. Greg Maddux – San Diego Padres (41 years old)Maddux is arguably the best pitcher of the last twenty years, and his resurgence after a deadline deal sending him from the pitiful Cubs to L.A. for a pennant race last season, showed everyone that the wily veteran could still get it done. He hasn’t been a strikeout pitcher since the 2001 season with Atlanta, but there are few pitchers who are a better lock for great ratios and 15 wins. Maddux won’t win the league for you, but he will provide a solid foundation that will enable you to gamble on younger flamethrowers.
