13. Miguel Olivo Florida Marlins
At
first glance, the numbers Olivo compiled last season (.263-16-58 in 127 games)
are quite good for a fantasy catcher. However, when one takes a closer look
within the numbers, it is fairly remarkable that he was able to accomplish as
much as he did. Consider that Olivo posted a .287 OBP and 103K/9BB on the
campaign as well as a .215 batting average and .620 OPS in 62 home games. The
power is legit, but just be aware that the batting average could be lower in
2007.

14. Brad Ausmus Houston Astros
The 37-year-old is a good example of a player who
has more value in real-life than in fantasy. His defense and ability to handle
a pitching staff, while extremely helpful to the Astros, does nothing for the
average fantasy owner. Ausmus is coming off of the worst offensive season of
his career (.230-2-39 with .593 OPS in 139 games) and has reported being
bothered by shoulder stiffness since December. As of now, they are downplaying
the shoulder injury as something that should only limit him early in spring
training, but it is just another strike against any potential value Ausmus might
have this year.

15. Javy Lopez Colorado Rockies
Lopez,
36, was decent with Baltimore
last season (.265-8-31 with .727 OPS in 76 games), but he was brutal in the 18
games he played for the Red Sox (.190-0-4 with .485 OPS). He is expected to
compete with Yorvit Torrealba and Chris Iannetta for two spots on the Colorado roster. The
23-year-old Iannetta is perhaps the most intriguing of the group as he hit
.336-14-48 with 55K/48BB in 91 games combined between Double-A Tulsa and
Triple-A Colorado Springs before hitting .260-2-10 with .759 OPS in 21 games
for the Rockies late last season. Lopez could
have some value in NL-only leagues, but we will have to see how he does this
spring. The one-year, $750,000 contract Lopez signed with Colorado is not guaranteed so they will not
hesitate to dump him if Iannetta and Torrealba clearly outperform him this
spring.
