Dye in the wool...
 | | White Sox got right-fielder Jermaine Dye
to put pen to paper on a two-year extension worth $22 million. |
Injuries, moves, rumors and newsmakers...
A
freshman Arizona pitcher makes a little history at the plate; the White
Sox take yet another big free agent off the market; Esteban Loaiza will
pitch for the A's this year; another Mets catcher hits the disabled
list; and more...
TWO-WAY GEMA day after Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb let his pitching do the talking yet again, promising righty Micah Owings played Babe Ruth and looked like a superstar on the mound and at the plate.
Not only did he pitch himself to a win, allowing three runs on as many
hits over 7.0 innings, striking out seven, but he was also a triple
away from the cycle at the plate. In a day at the plate more resembling
a top slugger than a pitcher, the rookie went 4-for-5 with a double,
two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored.
It was actually an unprecedented day at the plate for a pitcher in the
majors because no other has had four hits, four runs and six RBIs in
the same game.
ANGELS
Might we have another case of the "Curse of the Home-Run Derby?" Angels superstar Vladimir Guerrero
won the all-star competition this year, back on July 10, but didn't hit
another home run until he launched two on August 2. Things looked
promising when he crushed another pair the following day, but he didn't
hit another one until Saturday.
ATHLETICS
Finally, Esteban Loaiza
has a scheduled date for his first start of the season. The veteran
righty has been sidelined all year with neck and knee injuries, though
he was originally scheduled to return from his neck injury in late-May
before his knee injury cropped up in mid-May. Now he's slated to go on
Wednesday in Toronto, having successfully completed his final rehab
start on Friday.
METS
They're hurting behind the plate in Queens these days, as the Mets' top
two catchers are now on the disabled list after backup-turned-No. 1 Ramon Castro hit the DL Saturday, joining top backstop Paul Lo Duca. As a result, they brought veteran Sandy Alomar Jr. back up to the majors and he'll share time behind the plate with Mike DiFelice until one of the top two returns.
ORIOLES
With news coming Friday that injured closer Chris Ray will probably miss the entire 2008 season as well, rumblings out of Baltimore have rookie righty Jim Hoey
being groomed to take over as closer next year. He earned the hold with
a scoreless 1.1 innings Saturday afternoon and has now tossed 6.1
scoreless innings with one walk and four strikeouts since being
recalled on August 9. They'll likely continue to use him in a setup
role for the rest of the season before possibly throwing him into the
fire as closer next year.
RANGERS
It was one pitcher healthy and another hurting on Saturday for the Rangers. They got young righty Kameron Loe back from a couple weeks out with back pain and he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings to earn the win in Minnesota. It was reliever Willie Eyre who went down to make room on the roster for Loe, placed on the DL with a stiff elbow.
RED SOX
As expected, veteran outfielder Bobby Kielty was brought up to the big club on Saturday, a day after the trade of Wily Mo Pena
cleared a spot for him. Since signing with the Red Sox earlier this
month, he played 10 games at Triple-A Pawtucket, batting just .237 but
hitting two home runs. He'll be their fourth outfielder, taking the
roster spot of young Jacoby Ellsbury, who was up for just one game.
REDS
To fill their vacancy in the rotation, the Reds called up young righty Elizardo Ramirez
to make Saturday's start. After making 19 starts with the big club last
year, he dealt with injury problems this year and worked his way back
through the minors and while he took the loss, he looked decent in his
first big-league start of the year, allowing three runs in 5.0 innings.
Veteran righty Victor Santos
was designated for assignment to make room for Ramirez, who will
probably get the chance to remain in the rotation for the rest of the
season.
WHITE SOX
The 2007-2008 free-agent class continues to thin out, as another top
player who could have tested the market has been signed. On Friday it
was the North-Side Cubs inking ace Carlos Zambrano and Saturday the South-Side White Sox got right-fielder Jermaine Dye
to put pen to paper on a two-year extension worth $22 million. There's
also a mutual option for 2010 worth $12 million on the new contract.
Coming off a massive career year, the 33-year old slugger had a
disappointing first half, but he's already doubled his home-run total
since the break with 12 more.
YANKEES
After a couple of lackluster starts, Roger Clemens
appears to be back on track. He returned from his five-game suspension
to win his second straight start on Saturday, striking out a
season-high eight Tigers. He allowed two runs over 6.0 innings,
following up a start in which he allowed one run in 6.0 frames.
