FANTASY INSIGHT:
Bryant entered his 12th NBA season — all with the Lakers — as the league's two-time defending scoring champion. Despite being regarded as one of the league's best players for the past several years, he had never finished above third in the voting.
Bryant received 82 first-place votes and 1,100 points in the media vote. He was followed by New Orleans' Chris Paul (28 and 894), Boston's Kevin Garnett (15 and 670) and Cleveland's LeBron James (1 and 438). (SF Gate)

Magic say Vazquez wants to play.
FANTASY INSIGHT:
The Magic say that former lottery pick Fran Vazquez of Spain wants to play for the team next season, but the roadblock is the $7-million buy-out in Vazquez' contract with European powerhouse FC Barcelona. His deal doesn't expire until after the 2008-09 season. "The kid wants to come over and play for us," Magic General Manager Otis Smith told the Sentinel on Wednesday after shootaround before the club faced the Detorit Pistons in Game 3. "But it's the buy-out. It's pretty substantial."
Smith indicated that Vazquez could try to reach a settlement with the club. NBA teams can only contribute a maximum of $500,000 toward a buy-out. (OrlandoSentinel.com)

Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady could need three months to recover following operations on his knee and shoulder.
FANTASY INSIGHT:
"I don't expect these issues to impact his ability to prepare for the upcoming season," said team physician Tom Clanton, who operated on McGrady's knee Tuesday.

Billups is confident in his team and their ability to perform when they feel a sense of urgency, or so he said after comments he made about earlier games not being 'must-wins' were misconstrued. Perhaps he's just overconfident: the former NBA Finals MVP had one of his worst games of the season in Game 3, shooting 2-for-11 for just 11 points and four assists as the Pistons looked to shift to another gear that simply never came.
FANTASY INSIGHT:
His sore knee may be bothering him more than he's let on, as he's only averaging 11.3 points and 4.7 dimes, but Billups has made his reputation as a big-time player and Game 4 is looming as the biggest game so far for the Pistons this season.
