KEEPER CORNER

Iguodala

EVERY YEAR, A
handful of players emerge from "promising" to
"superstar." If you're in a keeper league, it's
essential to know who these players will be. So which guys
are poised to enter the league's truly elite in 2007-08?
Andre
Iguodala, G/F, 76ers
After Iverson was traded last year, Iguodala exploded. Few
noticed he finished tied for second in the NBA last season
in triple-doubles, with three. A top-10 player.
Josh Smith, F, Hawks
Don't sleep on J-Smoove. He's not just a dunker anymore and
simply does everything on the court. His blocks alone could
help you win a league.
Gerald Wallace, F, Bobcats
He may see less ball this season because the Bobs are
better, but Wallace quietly puts up monster all-round stats.
And he's still only 25 years old.
Al Jefferson, PF/C, Timberwolves
Now that he's in Minny he's their go-to guy. He gets
compared a lot to legend Moses Malone, and that's actually
not too far off.
Luol Deng, F, Bulls
Last season Deng showed he's ready for the next step. If he
hit more threes, he would be even more coveted than he
already is.

STOCK Watch
AFTER LAST SEASON'S huge
disappointment with the Jazz, it looks like Andrei
Kirilenko (picture, top) may be heading elsewhere. The defensive
dominator and former All-Star reportedly posted a trade demand on a blog
this week, saying he wants out. While he was a fantasy bust last season,
Kirilenko is still young (26) and is coming off a great performance at
the FIBA Eurobasket tourney that saw him help lead Russia to the title.
If Kirilenko can find a team that will let him shoot the ball more than
six times per game (as Utah did last season), he may once again become a
major fantasy force.
AS SOME expected would happen, Sarunas
Jasikevicius has been waived by the Warriors. The veteran point
guard didn't play much for Golden State last season following an
in-season trade with the Pacers, but he certainly has the talent to be a
solid rotation contributor for the right team. Now 31, Jasikevicius was
for years considered one of the top guards in Europe, and he might
become a solid source of assists and three-pointers if he lands in a
good situation. He recently led the FIBA Eurobasket tournament in
assists per game (5.6).
POOR Charlie
Bell. First, he was mostly passed over in the early stage of
free agency. The Bucks, his 2007-08 team, didn't give him the deal he
was looking for, but hold the right to match any other team's offer
(since he's a restricted free agent). Then this week, the Heat inked
Bell to a five-year, $18.5 Million offer sheet. But after Bell went on
record as saying he doesn't want to return to Milwaukee, this week the
Bucks surprisingly matched the offer. The bottom line is, he's bringing
his 13.5 points and three helpers per game back to Milwaukee.
IT'S NOT OFTEN we here at Spin include a head coach in Stock
Watch, but Donn Nelson deserves a mention. Why? Because Nellie has such
a unique coaching style that his recent re-signing with the Warriors has
notable fantasy significance. Last year Nellie revitalized the careers
of Baron
Davis and Stephen
Jackson with his wide-open style, and the likes of Monta
Ellis, Andris
Biedrins, and Matt
Barnes blossomed under him into fantasy forces. His return
should mean more of the same for all those players in 2007-08.
SLEEPING Giant
Mikki
Moore, PF/C, Kings
How well-known is Moore to NBA fans? Not well-known enough that more
than a few of them even pronounce his name correctly. It's pronounced ÎMikey,'
and while Moore is no spring chicken (soon to be 32) or even a likely
starter this upcoming season, he's a player to keep an eye on. Here's
why: during the playoffs last spring Moore was the Nets' best post
player. While that's not saying much considering how weak Jersey was up
front, Moore did score in double-figures in his final seven postseason
contests and was a reliable source for boards. With the Kings needing a
lot of help in the paint, Moore could conceivably play big minutes for
them this season.
INJURY Update
HE DOESN'T GET as
much hype as other top NBA stars, but Elton
Brand is nevertheless one of the NBA's most consistently
dominant performers. The veteran big-man ruptured his left Achilles
tendon six weeks ago, and recently had his cast removed. That means
Brand can start rehabbing his leg. While it's good news that he's making
progress, Brand is still expected to miss much of the upcoming season
because of the severity of the injury. The 28-year-old has averages of
20.3 points, 10.2 boards, 2.7 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game over an
eight-year career.
