STOCK Watch
AS EXPECTED, the Kobe
Bryant (picture, top) trade watch is heating up again. After the superstar
scorer demanded a trade early in the summer (then backed off it), Bryant
has reportedly been sitting out of Laker workouts for several days.
While he's expected to return to practice, Kobe's actions come on the
heels of team owner Jerry Buss telling reporters that the Lakers will
listen to trade offers for Bryant. If he goes anywhere, look for the
Bulls to be at the top of the list.
IT'S COMMON knowledge that Kevin
Durant of the Sonics is the favorite for the NBA's Rookie of the
Year award this season. Less commonly known is Al
Thornton, who was selected further down the draft at No.14
overall by the Clippers. But don't expect that to continue. Thornton has
been the Clips' best player so far during preseason, dropping 24 points
on Warriors and 18 on the Blazers. Don't be surprised if Thornton starts
at a forward spot and challenges for the rookie scoring lead.
UTAH'S STARTING lineup is pretty much set in stone, thanks to a
star-studded quartet of Deron
Williams, Carlos
Boozer, Andrei
Kirilenko, and Mehmet
Okur. All they're missing is a star shooting guard, but that may
change this season if Ronnie
Brewer keeps it up. The second-year swingman has been fantastic
during preseason so far, all but claiming the starting 2-guard spot. He
dropped 28 points and five steals on the Bucks, and has led the Jazz in
scoring in most preseason games. Scoop him up in your draft.
AFTER A disappointing 2006-07 campaign, Jameer
Nelson is finally looking like a very nice pick to finally break
through in '07-08. He's been excellent during preseason play so far, and
Orlando's new head coach Stan Van Gundy seems determined to give Nelson
major minutes. Expect him to finally emerge as an above-average fantasy
point guard this season, especially with a better supporting cast that
includes new scoring star Rashard
Lewis.
SLEEPING Giant
Mouhamed
Sene, C, SuperSonics
Seen by some as a bust during his rookie campaign last season, Mouhamed
Sene may soon start proving those doubters wrong. Drafted No.10
overall last year by the Sonics, Sene (who is also known as 'Saer')
might be poised for a breakout. It was only one game, but his recent
preseason outing against the Pacers served notice: Sene has talent. He
came off the bench to grab 15 boards, block four shots, and score six
points for Seattle. He'll have plenty of competition for the center spot
on the Sonics (including Kurt
Thomas, Nick
Collison, Robert
Swift, and Johan
Petro) but Sene has the goods to be another Samuel
Dalembert if all goes well.
INJURY Update
WHEN HE'S HEALTHY, Lamar
Odom is one of the NBA's best and most underrated fantasy
options. The problem for his fantasy owners is he hasn't been terribly
healthy for most of his career, and that may continue this season. Odom
played only 56 games last season, and according to the Los Angeles Times
he hasn't practiced at all during preseason while recovering from
off-season shoulder surgery. Keep Odom on the radar, but don't expect a
fast start from him once the regular campaign kicks off.
A NASTY SPILL earlier in training camp had some early reports
speculating that Monta
Ellis may have been paralyzed. Happily, Ellis only suffered a
neck sprain during the incident that saw him collapse to the floor after
colliding with a teammate. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that
Ellis should be ready to start playing again, as he now has medical
clearance.
