Another Week in the Life of the Association...
  Renaldo Balkman -- Fantasy Basketball
Renaldo Balkman might not put up the sexy numbers, but that does not make him any less important.

Ben Wallace. Samuel Dalembert. Renaldo Balkman. Mikki Moore.

Notice anything about the list? No, it is not going to be the Eastern Conference All-Star lineup – chances are none of them will even make it. Nevertheless, they are very valuable to their respective teams.

Points, rebounds and assists win games – and they are what are sexy. It is what fans are looking for, what announcers love to talk about and what makes the SportsCenter Top 10 each night.

However, a steady diet of just points, rebounds and assists will not win your fantasy league. In fact, you will probably end up near the bottom. To win, you need a healthy amount of stats from all parts of the statistical nutrition pyramid. Yes, that means points, many points, but it also means the less sexy things, stats that definitely do not make the Top 10.

Here are some players that are keeping their fantasy owners happy and healthy with their well-rounded play:

Utah Jazz G/F Ronnie Brewer (13.5 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 2.4 APG) is not turning any heads with his “sexy stats” – although the 13 PPG are not bad, but he is averaging 2.7 steals per game so far this season through 13 games. Combined with his point total while grabbing a few boards and dishing some dimes, his 2.7 steals make him a hearty fantasy player.

The Lakers are not the only team in Los Angeles. The Clippers are sort of meandering along out West, but center Chris Kaman (18.3 PPG, 13.9RPG, 1.9 APG) is lighting it up. Obviously, the 18 points and 14 boards are sweet, but his 2.7 blocks per game are what make him appealing. His blocking ability currently ranks him fifth in the league, ahead of such players as Dwight Howard, Yao Ming and Amare Stoudemire. Kaman is really having a great season and many players probably undervalue him. His numbers are better than Stoudemire’s (18.1 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 0.7 APG), and when you include all fantasy categories, Kaman outplays Ming (22.4 PPG, 10.2 RPG, 2.6 APG). There is something to say about being the big fish in the little pond.

You have to hang on to the ball. Allen Iverson scored a robust 29 points against the Clippers on Wednesday but also committed eight turnovers. Eight times equals fantasy killer. Enter Antawn Jamison (22.2 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 1.2 APG). Very nice point and rebound totals – and they should increase since Gilbert Arenas is out for a while – but the man does not give up the ball. Jamison averages just 1.6 turnovers per game. At the amount of minutes that he plays per game, that is remarkable. Of the top 25 fantasy players this year, only Jason Terry, Shawn Marion, and Josh Howard turn it over less.

There is the charity stripe and there is the three-point line – both important marks on the hardwood. Steve Nash (18.9 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 10.8 APG) still has not missed a free throw this season, and Ray Allen (19.6 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 3.5 APG) is shooting 92% from the stripe – not bad for an old man.

Peja Stojakovic (14.4 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.3 APG) and Rashard Lewis (19.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.4 APG) can flat-out shoot from way outside. They each are averaging 2.8 three-pointers per game so far. For Peja, that means that 58% of his points are coming from behind the arc, and, oh yeah, he also shoots 95% from the stripe.

Here are some notable performances from the last week:

LeBron James (31.4 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 8.1 APG) had a triple-double against Toronto on Saturday putting up 37 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists en route to Cleveland’s 111-108 win vs. the Raptors. He also averaged just less than 40 points for the week.

In Arenas’ absence, Caron Butler (22.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 3.3 APG) stepped up big for the dismal Wizards. He also recorded a triple-double getting 26 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a losing effort.

Michael Redd (24.5 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 4.0 APG) had himself a very nice week. In the Bucks’ three games, Redd averaged 29.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.0 steal and shot 52% from the field.

He is alive, after all – Shaquille O’Neal (16.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.2 APG) showed signs of life as he averaged 21.3 points per game this week. Welcome back, big daddy.
