Barnes producing...

THE CHARITY STRIPE
With the
season well under way, it is getting tougher each week to find diamonds in the
rough for you, my loyal readers. But, I
have a job to do, and once again I have somehow uncovered three players flying
under the radar that you need to add to your squad. I also found a trio of vets, whom, if you have, you need to quit
living off their past greatness, it is time to wake up and smell the
roses. They aren't so sweet anymore. If you have any doubts about my absolute
precision with my recommendations, consider that David Stern thinks I'm a
genius. Why? You might ask. Well, way back on November 13 (a) I
mentioned Jamario Moon in my three who've impressed. Given I'm always way ahead of the curve it took Sternie a little
while to catch up, but Monday he named Jamario as one of the four contestant's
in the league's annual Slam Dunk contest!
What better example of fantasy stardom is there than that?
Also, if
you have any personal questions and would like to sip from my pool of
knowledge, shoot me an email at danoff.charles@gmail.com. You may even end up being featured in next
week's Charity Stripe!
Three Who've
Impressed
Chris
Mihm
Los
Angeles Lakers
Fantasy
Eligible Positions: C, PF
Following
the devastating Andrew Bynum injury, the Lakers have to find players to fill in
at the center position. Currently Mihm
is injured following an Achilles inflammation, so Kwame Brown and Ronny Turiaf
have been playing. Really, you could chose
any one of the three: Brown, Turiaf or Mihm to pick up, looking for minutes and
numbers in Bynum's absence. Once he
gets back, I think Mihm is the best bet of the three. Of the trio, Mihm has the best historic numbers and the last year
he was healthy, '05 - '06, he was a better fantasy player than Brown or Turiaf,
who were also on the team then. You
could wait a little before adding Chris, but if you have room on your injured
reserve, I say now is the time.
Thaddeus
Young
Philadelphia
76ers
Fantasy
Eligible Positions: SF, PF
This one
may be a little too early for the young Young (ha), but I think the time is
right to make the move on him. Despite
the nice job coach Maurice Cheeks is doing with the youthful 76ers, their
season is going nowhere. Sooner or
later, the brass upstairs is going to tell Cheeks its time to play the
youngsters more to see what they can do, and to lose more games to ensure a
high lottery pick for the team.
Thaddeus
is one of the youngest players in the NBA at 19, and has shown it this year, as
his inconsistency hasn't allowed him to crack into the rotation. Until January, that is, where Young has
played in all the 76ers games, averaging 21.1 minutes. Looking at this numbers per 40 minutes,
Young is producing when he's on the court, he's putting up: 17 points, 8.5
rebounds and 2.3 steals per 40. Those
numbers figure to only increase, as he gets more comfortable with the NBA game
as the season progresses. Given that in
January he was already shooting making over 54% of his shots, I'd say odds are
good he could be a nice fantasy contributor over the season's remainder.
Matt
Barnes
Golden
State Warriors
Fantasy
Eligible Positions: SF, PF
The 5th
year man out of UCLA had a breakout regular season and playoffs last year for
the Warriors. He was one of the
sparkplugs on the team that pulled off the biggest upset in playoff
history. This offseason he was rewarded
with a $3 million dollar contact from the team. While his numbers have not been quite as good this year, he is doing
enough that he can be a nice low-level, all-around consistent contributor for
your fantasy squad. Aside from last
Saturday's game where he was idiotically left off the active list, Barnes had
been playing above 22 minutes for the team.
January has been his best month, as he's been averaging 8.8 points, 5.8
rebounds and 2.4 assists, while shooting 51% from the field. Look for Barnes to play more minutes down
the stretch as the Warriors attempt to qualify for one of the last playoff
spots in the West. When the going gets
tough, coaches tend to ride harder players who have played well in big games
before. Coach Nelson will be doing so
with Barnes over the next few months ... assuming he can remember to activate
him.
Three to Digress
Kirk
Hinrich
Chicago
Bulls
Fantasy
Eligible Positions: PG, SG
I may be
letting my personal bias, as a Bulls fan, cloud my judgment here, but I do not
think so. If you drafted Hinrich, you
already know what a disappointment he's been.
His points, assists, and steals are all at career low levels, and he is
shooting a horrendous 29.3% from beyond the arc. The reason to move Hinrich now, is it seems as though the Bulls
just play worse when he's on the court.
As if his teammates don't like the Scott Skiles brown noser even after
the coach is gone. Management has to
realize what's going on, and if the Bulls do want to make the playoffs,
Hinrich's minutes are going to have to decrease. Time to cut your losses and salvage whatever you can for Captain
Kirk. If you continue to wait, you
might get nothing, and he will hurt you every time you start him.
Tracy
McGrady
Houston
Rockets
Fantasy
Eligible Position: SG
Fans who
have followed Kevin Durant's Idol's (1) career know how he has been plagued by
injuries, and nothing has changed this season.
He recently missed 11 games, and the team actually played better without
him, going 7-4. Because of this, and
because Tracy is still recovering, he has come off the bench the past two
games. A man who was once the NBA's
leading scorer, has now been relegated to a sixth man role, and could continue
in that function for the foreseeable future.
To make matters worse, McGrady will be playing injured the rest of the
way this year,
"It
was really bad," McGrady said of the pain in his knee. "Not only was
I tight, but I was also feeling pain in my knee. It's going to be that way
because I can't rest to let it heal all the way up. It's just something I'm
going to have to tolerate."
For the
rest of your current fantasy season McGrady will be injured and coming off the
bench for a team that plays better without him. Move him immediately to a fellow owner who still remembers him as
the kid out of high school who lit it up for the Orlando Magic.
Dwayne
Wade
Miami
Suck
Fantasy
Eligible Position: SG
I watched
Monday night's Heat game, and I my jaw dropped watching Wade's herculean
performance scoring 42 points, including Miami's final 18, in a losing effort
against LBJ and the Cavs. Aside from
being awed by each made shot Wade continued to drain time and again down the
court, I was amazed at how he did it, despite looking like he could use a
walker to help him get from end to end.
Wade is
hurt in a bad way. Despite his
offensive output, he's currently the league's 6th leading scorer; he is
light-years away from the kid who single-handedly won the Finals a couple years
back. One of two things will happen
soon: one, the Heat will realize the season is lost and shut down Wade to save
him for next year and to ensure a high lottery pick, or two, Wade's already
crumbling body will finally break.
Don't be the owner in your league with Wade on your roster when one of
those two inevitable outcomes occurs.
Get rid of him.
