Sports Grumblings Staff Mock Draft and Analysis: Garber

A case of premature eli-culation? John Garber thinks so!
|
Explain your pre-draft strategy for this type of draft format. Overall the plan was to emphasize RBs and WRs, taking three RBs in the first four rounds. At the twelfth pick, you are really forced into a value strategy and it was important to make sure that, coming out of the first four rounds, I had enough high-level talent to still compete with the team that got the premier running backs.
Explain the thought process behind your first-round selection. Taking Shaun Alexander at the 12 spot was a no-brainer. I really didn't expect him to fall that far. It's amazing what one season can do to a guy's stock!
Which was your best value pick, and why? I think Brandon Jackson in the ninth round has the most potential for big
returns. It's hard to predict what's going to take place in Green
Bay's backfield, but I believe that Jackson is the guy the coaching staff wants
in the starting role. If he turns out to be the man in Green Bay, I think
the ninth round is significantly undervalued.
Which pick would you "do over" if you had the chance, and why? I think I took Eli Manning too soon. It was the first pick of the 10th round and I was worried about having no QB and no picks for the next 23 turns. The
way it played out, I would have happily taken Ben Roethlisberger two rounds later.
Not including yourself, which owner had the best overall draft, and why?
I like Scott Sargent's team. If Cedric Benson can carry the load for Chicago, he's got a solid starting lineup. He's got great depth at wide out with proven fantasy studs in Marvin Harrison and Larry Fitzgerald and high upside guys
in Vincent Jackson and Reggie Brown. Matt Leinart is a very good backup QB and couldend up putting up QB1 type numbers. About the only thing I don't like is using the 93rd pick on Kellen Winslow.
Not including yourself, which owner had the worst overall draft, and why? I think depth at the RB spot and a lot of hopes placed on Randy Moss
in what, traditionally, is a spread the ball around type of offense, puts
TC Cannon in a precarious position. I think the combo of Peyton Manning, Antonio Gates and Moss may have all been too early to take. I know it's not the generalconsensus but I do really like Brandon Jacobs and pairing him with Willie Parker could end up turning out two RB1 type players for his team.
