Roy Cankosyan expects a big bounceback by Big Ben.
|
Explain your
pre-draft strategy for this type of draft format.
My strategy was to draft the following in order with my first four picks: RB, RB, WR, WR. In the fifth round, I would wait to see what
fell to me. I’m a huge proponent of
drafting two RBs with the first two picks based on the value and scarcity of
quality starting running backs.
Explain the
thought process behind your first-round selection.
I drafted Frank Gore, because he was the best running
back available. He got better as the
season wore on last year, so I’m not concerned about him breaking down due to a
heavy workload. Gore is one of the few
backs in the league that doesn’t have to worry about sharing carries with
another back, because the 49ers have little depth at that position.
Which was your
best value pick, and why?
Ben
Roethlisberger was my best value pick,
because he was never himself last year after his pre-season motorcycle
crash. When healthy, Big Ben is a
quality quarterback who is still developing.
He has not yet reached his full potential, so 20-25 touchdowns with less
than 10 interceptions is not out of the question. Roethlisberger has the “it” factor, and he’s one of the more
impressive young quarterbacks to come out of college in recent years.
Which pick would
you “do over” if you had the chance, and why?
I would draft Vincent Jackson over Joe Jurevicius, because the former is the
WR1 for the Chargers. Also, Jackson has
more upside and isn’t as injury-prone as Jurevicius.
Not including yourself,
which owner had the best overall draft, and why?
Justin Kopacz had a very
impressive draft from the perspective that he drafted four studs with his first
four picks. He violated my general rule
of drafting two running backs with the first two picks, but it could pay huge
dividends if the Kevin Jones or LaMont Jordan picks pan out. You can’t help but be impressed with the
upside of a team that possesses LJ, CJ, Steve
Smith, and Carson Palmer.
Not including
yourself, which owner had the worst overall draft, and why?
Lucas drafted two RBs
with very little potential for receptions in Rudi Johnson and Willis McGahee. I
don’t like Plaxico Burress as her WR1, and she reached in making Calvin Johnson her WR2.
Furthermore, I’m not sold on Randy McMichael
at TE on a Rams team that loves to throw to their wide receivers.
