Sports Grumblings Staff Mock Draft and Analysis: Finn

Finn feels that Portis is being undervalued in Auction drafts.

What is your overall strategy heading into an Auction-style draft?
Auction strategies should change like the weather and understanding the mindset of the league owners isn't always possible until a number or players have been bid on and purchased. Auction has a life of its own and understanding the flow of a draft is essential to success. This is where practice makes perfect and participating in Mock Auctions this summer will assist both the novice and the expert in preparation for draft day.

How is this different (if at all) from the strategy you use in traditional snake drafts?
Snake drafting and auctioning couldn't be more different. While serpentine drafts regiment and slot an owner, auction allows freedom to create; early chaos; mid-round shill-bidding owners desperate to fill a specific need; and late round lockouts for those that have that knack to spend wisely.

Other than your picks, which selection was too pricey in your opinion?
While Mark Haverty's team has upside and youth, spending 62 percent of his budget on two running backs (Shaun Alexander-$39 and Rudi Johnson-$23) that won't take advantage of the league's PPR scoring  endangered his budget.

Other than your picks, which selection was a tremendous value?
The purchase of Peyton Manning at $16 dollars. Comparatively, Manning's $16 dollar tag is low for the overall top signal caller compared to the $59 price tag on Chargers' LaDainian Tomlinson.

Which was your best/worst pick?
Lions quarterback Jon Kitna at $5 and running back Clinton Portis at $16. Both players, if healthy, are in line for big seasons. Detroit and Kitna are in the second season under offensive guru Mike Martz and Redskins' HC Joe Gibbs and OC Al Saunders will be run-first this season. Washington could well lead the league in team rushing yards.

Which team looks the strongest to you, and why?
I like the balance of Davies’ squad. The starting lineup is talented across the board with only his soft bench holds him back from being the preseason favorite. A healthy Terrell Owens and Travis Henry make the Davies' roster dangerous on any given Sunday.
