He may be young and inexperienced, but Haverty feels that Vince Young was his best buy during the draft.

What is
your overall strategy heading into an Auction-style draft?
My usual auction strategy is spend early, and all but
ensure that I have spent a good chunk of my money on two elite running backs. Usually, my leagues are three RB leagues, where the shortage of running backs is far more profound, so it really did not work here as much as I would have liked. Am I happy with my two stud backs? Sure. Would I be happier if the rest of the teams had to stretch even further for their backs? Heck yeah.
How is this
different (if at all) from the strategy you use in traditional snake drafts?
In traditional drafts, I normally would just grab the best
player available, and I would not reach for a running back if the best player
available were significantly better than the best running back available. In
auctions, I go all out for backs and just wait for the other positions later,
saving a minor fraction of my money for them. In drafts, where what I get is so
much more dependent on slot and everyone else, I just worry about talent above
all.
Other than
your picks, which selection was too pricey in your opinion?
It’s what happens when two owners have two much money left
late, and nothing better to do than spend – Mojo and I entered into bidding
wars for two wide receivers, Laveranues Coles and Larry Fitzgerald.
He won, but the price for both seems too high to me.
Other than
your picks, which selection was a tremendous value?
It might sound crazy, but I really like Steven Jackson
at $42 when LaDainian Tomlinson goes for $59. Sure, both are a little
expensive – okay, a lot – but like I said in the beginning, I like spending on
two stud backs early, and he was a good buy considering how much LT2 went for.
On a completely different level, when Carson Palmer
goes for $20, one has to like a $16 Peyton Manning.
Which was
your best/worst picks?
Worst: I went too high on Shaun Alexander. Yes, I
said I like paying for RB, but this was panic after not getting LT2 or Steven
Jackson. I should have bid on either one more and had a safer bet.
Best: I know he is just a young quarterback still, but I
have to feel good about Vince Young at $3. The potential is there for
him to be worth significantly more there.
Which team
looks the strongest to you, and why?
Bob Lung’s team ended up far closer to a team I
normally sign than my own – two very solid backs, some cheap options at QB and
WR with upside, and close to the bare minimum on TE, K, and defense. Bob did a
better job of bidding like me than I did!
