The Master of Quality Games, Bob Lung, says he got an outstanding value in Tony Romo, snagging him for a mere two dollars.

What is your overall strategy heading into an
Auction-style draft?
My normal strategy in most auctions is to buy the top player
available as soon as he is nominated and then fit the remaining team around
him. This was especially that case here
with LaDainian
Tomlinson. His numbers
greatly distanced themselves from the number two player in the NFL. Whether that’s Larry Johnson, Frank Gore
or Steven
Jackson, Tomlinson is the uber-stud in this scoring format. I was expecting to buy less than $5 for my
quarterback, $3 - $5 for my receivers and a $1 each for my tight end and
kicker. I had planned on only a $1 or
$2 for my defense, but I couldn’t pass up the Bears defense for $3.
How is this different (if at all) from the strategy you
use in traditional snake drafts?
The
auction is greatly different than a snake draft because every player is
available at a price. Determining the
price is the key to the auction. Find
the right values at the right time and you’ll have an excellent team with great
depth. In a snake draft, it’s all about
what pick you have. Whether you pick
first, middle or last in the first round will dictate your draft strategy, you
may never get the chance to truly get the players you want because of where you
pick.
Other than your picks, which selection was too pricey
in your opinion?
I personally thought Shaun Alexander for $39 was way too high
for him in a PPR (points per reception) league, especially with Larry Johnson
going for $36, Brian Westbrook for $24 and Willie Parker for $25. Even if he’s 100% healthy, he may not put up
the big numbers of years ago. I
personally don’t see him even matching Parker’s numbers in 2007.
Other than your picks, which selection was a tremendous
value?
Tom
Brady for $11 was a fantastic buy. He was $5 less than Peyton Manning and has the potential this
season to be pretty close to Manning’s fantasy numbers. Overall, I think many of the quarterbacks
were great values. The receivers were
fairly close as well. The running backs
were so greatly overvalued in this auction that it just adjusts the other
positions so much, that most teams got some great deals.
Which was your best/worst picks?
I think my best pick was Tony Romo for $2. His numbers don’t look very strong in 2006
because he only played in 12 games.
However, here are some rankings for Romo that may surprise you. He ranked 1st in yards per
attempt; 2nd in touchdowns per attempt and ranked 5th in
overall quarterback rating. Throw in a
58% Quality Games earned per games played and he ranks 7th
overall. He should be a top ten
quarterback in 2007, if not possibly top five.
All for $2, I’m a happy drafter!
My worst value was probably Tomlinson. As much as I wanted, I didn’t realize how
far the remaining running back values would fall. If I could have bought him at $45, I could have built a more
solid team with the extra money. He’s
by far the best, but if he falters at all, my team is in big trouble.
Which team looks the strongest to you, and why?
On paper, all of the teams have strengths and weaknesses,
however, overall I like Tony Finn’s team the best. He drafted a ton of running backs to give him excellent depth and
is extremely solid from top to bottom in his starters. He never spent more than $16 for anyone
player and therefore did an excellent job of looking for “Tier-Two” players by
letting the upper-tier players go for much higher values. Well done, Tony!
