 Thomas Jones - Fantasy Football
Running room has been hard to come by for Thomas Jones.

Last Monday night was not a good one for my fantasy teams and me.  First, I had to endure the Yankees being eliminated in the first round AGAIN by the Cleveland Indians.  It hurt, but I’m not one of those fans that think that the Yankees should win the World Series every year simply because they have far and away the highest payroll in the game.  Anything can happen in a short five-game series, and that’s why I’ve always been in favor of seven-game series for the opening round.  It still won’t guarantee that the better team will always win (nothing will), but it will make it much harder for the underdog.  While I’m on the topic of baseball, it’s high time that Bud Selig comes to his senses and realizes that instant replay is the way to go for the future.  Baseball is the only major sports league that doesn’t use some form of instant replay.  I’ve never bought the tired old arguments about mistakes being part of the game or that replay slows the game down too much.  I’m willing to take the two or three minutes to let the umpires review a call to make sure that they got it right, and I’m willing to bet that a majority of baseball fans would agree with me.

Now, I will tell you the second reason why last Monday night blew huge chunks.  I lost my football game in HEAT by a score of 193 to 192.45.  That is 0.55 points for you scoring at home!  That brought my record to an embarrassing 1-4.  Marion Barber caught a pass on the second to last play prior to the game-winning field goal to hand me another loss.  The Cowboys should never have even had the ball for the game-winning drive!  They recovered an onside kick to get the ball back and break my heart.  Also, Barber would never have made the catch if T.O. had held onto the ball one play earlier, because the Cowboys were already in field goal range.

Have I told you recently how much the 49ers suck?  Alex Smith is following the Ryan Leaf path to being a bust, and that’s pissing me off, because I’m the not so proud owner of Frank Gore.  The 49ers can’t pass the ball worth a damn, so teams are stacking eight men on the line to stop Gore.  Smith might miss the rest of the season with a separated shoulder, but things haven’t improved with the venerable Trent Dilfer at the helm.  Have I mentioned that I also own Vernon Davis in HEAT and Darrell Jackson in HAFA?  Suffice to say that I will NEVER pin my hopes on any 49ers player in the near future.  I’d complain to you about Laurence Maroney from my HAFA team, but I’m quite sure that you’re sick of my whining.

Now, here are some quick hits for the week.  The Jets will have to give Kellen Clemens a shot if Chad Pennington doesn’t turn it around in the next game or two.  The team still has a remote shot at the playoffs, because the Patriots are the only dominant team in the conference at the moment.  Hopefully, Dallas hands New England their first loss this week in the battle of the unbeaten.

Lastly, the league will have to change the dumb rule that allows LOSER coaches like Dick Jauron to call timeout just before the kicker gets off the kick.  It’s not fair that a kicker has to make TWO game-winning field goals, because some classless LOSERS like Jauron resort to this shameful tactic.

Stock Up

QB Jason Campbell, Redskins
I have to tell you that I didn’t think much of this guy at the beginning of the year.  I still don’t think he’ll ever be a top-notch QB1, but he’s a serviceable QB2.  That might not sound like a ringing endorsement, but you could do a lot worse if your QB1 got injured or is on his bye week.

RB Brian Leonard, Rams
Leonard’s stint as the starting running back got extended this week when news came out that Steven Jackson might be sidelined until Week 11.  He’s a very promising rookie with good hands and surprising athleticism.

RB Kevin Jones, Lions
Jones is slowly being worked back into the starting role.  He was having a great year both running and catching the ball last season, so owners who stole him in the later rounds will be glad that they did before the year is over.  Also, fill-in Tatum Bell has been atrocious, so you don’t have to worry about Jones sharing carries for much longer.

WR Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals
He’s always had great stats with Kurt Warner behind center, so it’s no surprise that his numbers have been going up the past few weeks.  With Matt Leinart out for the year, Fitzgerald could easily rank among the top-five.

WR Braylon Edwards, Browns
The team may not be getting better, but one thing that’s clear is that Edwards will be a factor before too long.  He’s already a good WR2, and he could turn into a credible WR1 before the year is out.

Stock Down

QB Marc Bulger, Rams
I will admit that this one shocks me.  I had Bulger as a top-five quarterback before the year, and I would have bet money that his early-season woes were just a fluke.  Now, I’m not so certain.  Bulger has not looked good this season, and injuries are the main culprit.  He might not be right all season, so you have to start exploring other options.

RB Thomas Jones, Jets
Here’s another guy that won’t have nearly the impact that I thought he’d have at the start of the year.  Jones is a hard runner that’s not finding any running room behind a suspect Jets offensive line.

RB Travis Henry, Broncos
The possible suspension has got to scare you even if it might not happen for at least another month.  At the very least, make sure you have Selvin Young as his handcuff, so you’re not killed if he is suspended.

WR Arnaz Battle, 49ers
Battle is suffering from the same malaise that’s stricken Gore and Darrell Jackson.  He is playing on an offense-challenged 49ers team.  That’s the politically correct way to say that they suck.  Battle is not a bad receiver, but you’ll rarely see him post starting caliber numbers in San Francisco.

WR Steve Smith, Panthers
Smith’s talent has not waned, but the team took a major hit when Jake Delhomme went out for the year with a bum elbow.  Smith’s numbers have been very pedestrian the past three weeks, and they might not approach the lofty stats he’s complied in the past with David Carr and newly signed Vinny Testaverde splitting time at quarterback.
