Midseason Thoughts
 Ronnie Brown - Fantasy Football
Adrienne like her studs at RB to get all the attention...

A thread brought up in the SportsGrumblings.com forums got me to thinking.  It stated:

I gave it some thought tonight - My strategy for buidling an offense will never be the same. If I knew three months ago, what I know now... watch out!”

This is true more so today than at most any other time as of late.

Offensive philosophies are changing throughout the league.  Teams are going to more RBBC than I can remember.  This is a good thing for the players themselves due to the fact that it will most likely extend their playing careers but, what does this do to fantasy players?

Think about it.  Using HAFA style scoring, the top three running backs are Ronnie Brown, Adrian  Peterson and LT.  Of those three, only AD has competition (albeit not much).  These three are head and shoulders of the fourth-place running back (as of now, it’s Westbrook).  LT is third at 161 points and Westy is back at 127.  There is a gap after him to Willis McGahee to 108.  From him on down, it’s a crapshoot.

There are backs in that mix that will rise to the top.  Addai missed one game followed by a bye week. LJ is mired in there along with Shaun Alexander, but are they on the way down?  Other than Addai there are no other dominant backs so you need to have at least two backs in that realm to handle the competition.  Edge is sitting at 95 points and is the last 90+ point scoring RB and he is the thirteenth best.

There are plenty of 100+ point WRs to grab and plenty more hovering just below the triple digit number.  The last 90+ point WR is Bobby Engram and he’s ranked 23rd.  Some of those WRs have spent a little time off or have entered the starting line-up due to injury.  It’s just a crazy season though.  Or is it?

Offenses seem to be throwing more and spreading things out.  That, coupled with RBBC may change the way many of us draft in the future.  Will we still go RB, RB in the first two rounds?  I’m sure, due to the lack of proven runners, many will.

What about the QBs?  Oh, they are flinging the ball around like I go through… nevermind.  Right now, there are 13 QBs at 100+ points and one over 200.  After that, it’s a guess as to who will step up.  And the injuries have been horrific.

How many of you are struggling because you don’t have an adequate QB2?  I’m sure that many of you are because there just aren’t that many point scorers in the position right now.  There are a few longshots that we can take and hope that they come alive but they are just that, longshots.  Who saw Derek Anderson as the third-ranked QB after six weeks with limited action in Week 1?

Building an offense next year just got a whole lot tougher.  One strategy might be just stay with the status quo.  Personally, I think that strategy is about to go bye-bye.  You may have to start thinking about RB, QB, WR just to get a good player in each position.  That sounds scary but think about it.

Let’s say that I pick in the middle of the round in a 12 team league.  In that area we are talking about Westbrook, Gore, Parker, Addai (maybe), Brown for the 1st round.  In the second, I can get another RB in a RBBC or I could get a Romo, Eli Manning, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Palmer.  Not bad at all.

I am arbitrarily going to pick two names of those and say I got Parker and Palmer.  Not a bad start at all and I’m liking my scoring opportunities thus far.  I now go to look at WR in round three.

Moss, CJ, TO and Harrison are most likely gone at this point but there is still plenty of talent out there.  Braylon Edwards comes to mind along with TJ Houshmandzadeh amongst a slew of others.  While I like TJ, I am going to go with Braylon since he is the #1 WR in Cleveland .

So now I have Parker, Palmer and Edwards.  Not bad so far.  I’m not going to try to go into the later rounds because there is ALWAYS a surprise lurking somewhere.  I like the firepower I have here and there are still plenty of players available where I can go get a RB2, WR2 and WR3 in the next three rounds.

So, RBBC may be in it’s infancy but its growing fast and by next year we may have less than a handful of featured backs to choose from.  The shift is already in the works in the NFL, it is affecting how we operate this year and it will affect the way we draft in the years to come.

Enough for this week.

It’s time for this one to Ramble On!  See Ya!!
