Welcome back to IDP Insights,
the original fantasy football column dedicated solely to the review and
analysis of Individual Defensive Players (IDP). Along with my trusted
companion, Mighty Max (the SportsGrumblings.com supercomputer), I’ll be
breaking down the top IDP performances of the previous week and then give the top strong plays for the upcoming week.
So sit back and enjoy the security
that
a strong defense provides… secure in the knowledge that Might
Max and I stand ready to defend your fantasy team’s
performance.

Top Performers for Week Fourteen
DL
Kyle Vanden
Bosch, Titans: KVB hasn’t been in the
news too often, and it’s very easy for owners to have abandoned him. But if you
look at the numbers at the end of the season, you’ll notice that Vanden Bosch
has put together a very good season. He’s also been consistent, if not
spectacular.
Stat Line: 7-1-3.
Patrick Kerney, Seahawks:
This guy has been on fire lately… he has 13.5 sacks on the
season, but 10 of them have come in the last five games, nine in the
last four. His torrid play has been key in the Seahawks second-half
surge.
Stat Line: 6-1-3.
Elvis Dumervil, Broncos:
As a rookie who played in 13 games last season, he recorded 8.5 sacks
and 17 tackles; as a starter through 13 games this season,
he’s already notched 11 QB kills and 34 tackles. I like to
see that type of improvement. Of course, he could use some consistency:
over 80% of his sacks (9 of 11) have come in just 30% of his starts (4
of 13). Having said all that, if you can sneak ol’ Elvis onto
your roster in these closing weeks of the season, he’s a
decent dynasty play.
Stat Line: 4-1-3; 1 FF.
Kevin Williams, Vikings: Right place, right time.
Stat Line: 0-1-0; 1 INT; 1 TD.
Will Smith, Saints:
I think I may have put the reverse whammy on Smith last week. After
making his first appearance on this list last week, I stated that Smith
was a huge disappointment and intimated that it might be a one-time
showing. Lo and behold, Smith followed up in Week 14 with a big game in
front of a national audience. Maybe he should pay me to crap on him
every week…
Stat Line: 7-1-1; 1 FF.
LB
Gary Brackett, Colts:
Undersized and speedy, Brackett reminds me a lot of Zach Thomas, in
that he uses his quickness to get in on a lot of tackles, while at the
same time filling the passing lanes to grab more than his share of
interceptions.
Stat Line: 6-3-0; 2 INT.
Matt Wilhelm, Chargers: Good news: Wilhelm is having a career year. Bad News: Wilhelm is nothing more than an average LB4 type.
Stat Line: 7-3-0; 1 INT.
Morlon Greenwood, Texans: Might be the quietest 100 tackles you’ve never heard of…
Stat Line: 7-6-1.
Ernie Sims, Vikings:
This kid is a tackling machine: at 119 stops, he is just four behind
last season’s total—he should easily set a new
“career high”. His lack of big plays (sacks or INT)
are keeping him from LB1 status, but if he ups his total stops to the
150-160 range, he can move to the upper tier based on tackles alone.
Stat Line: 8-6-0; 1 FF.
Jon Beason, Panthers: Beason is much like Sims, but as rookie he has the potential for a few more big plays in the seasons to come.
Stat Line: 10-2-0.
DB
Marcus Trufant,
Seahawks: First it was Lofa Tatupu picking
off
three balls two weeks ago; then DE Patrick Kerney sacked Kurt Warner
three times last week; Trufant joined in and picked Warner off three
times. I guess things run in threes for Seattle. Trufant also likes to
keep things in-house: all seven of his INTs this season have come at
the expense of division opponents.
Stat Line: 4-2-0; 3 INT; 1 TD.
Roman Harper, Saints:
Harper’s rookie season was cut short at five games, so I kind
of look at this year as being his rookie campaign. With 76 tackles and
two picks, Harper is on his way to being a solid IDP safety.
Stat Line: 4-0-0; 1 INT; 1 TD.
Shawn Springs,
Redskins: If you had Springs in your
lineup, you did pretty well for yourself this week. Then again, I doubt that
anyone reading this column actually had Springs on their roster…
Stat Line: 4-0-0; 2 INT.
Chris Harris, Panthers:
Given the opportunity to start with the Panthers this season, Harris
has proven to be a hard-hitting safety for the Cats. In addition to his
84 tackles, he’s managed to induce opposing ball-carriers
into coughing up the ball seven times.
Stat Line: 10-4-0; 2 FF.
Ronald Bartell,
Rams: I’d be lying if I told you that I was aware of Bartell’s existence prior to last week…
Stat Line: 8-0-0; 1 FF; 1 INT.
