FANTASY INSIGHT: The Cardinals drafted two running backs over the weekend, which is expected to lead to the release of running back Edgerrin James.
The Cardinals were holding on to James to make sure they were covered at running back. With selection of Chris "Beanie" Wells in the first round and LaRod Stephens-Howling in the seventh, the club now has five backs on the roster, excluding James.

| | James, Edgerrin - RB - Ari 2008-11-19 21:47:26 Edge wants out of the desert?
FANTASY INSIGHT: According to the Arizona Republic, James, through his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, asked the organization for his release two weeks ago, and the Cardinals have refused.
James, the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft, was benched on November 2 at St. Louis in favor of rookie Tim Hightower and has carried the ball just three times for five yards during Arizona's three-game winning streak.
| | James, Edgerrin - RB - Ari 2008-01-31 13:06:33 Chiefs RB Larry Johnson told the KC Star he is spending most of the offseason in the Miami area, where he's working out with fellow NFL backs Edgerrin James and Willis McGahee, but he plans to attend the Chiefs' offseason program. "I don't ever miss an offseason program," Johnson said. "I haven't missed one since I've been here, so no sense in missing one now." - | | James, Edgerrin - RB - Ari 2007-08-26 14:59:30 Edgerrin James sat out Saturday's game with a sore hamstring. He practiced Thursday and Friday and even warmed up with the team Saturday but the coaching staff is being cautious with the teams featured back. | | James, Edgerrin - RB - Ari 2007-08-13 20:49:08 RB Marcel Shipp continues to receive praises from the team coaching staff, brass and stringers closely following the Cardinals practices. With each passing practice Shipp looks more and more like the Whisenhunt short yardage back.
FANTASY INSIGHT: Currently Edge James is the every down back but it's becoming evident that he will lose short yardage and goal line work to Shipp. Owners need to downgrade James to a No 2 RB in the rankings and deep league participants need to take a long hard look at Shipp on draft day.
| | James, Edgerrin - RB - Ari 2007-08-08 1:16:52 While James isn't getting the fantasy respect around the league that he is getting at SG, there is strong evidence to believe he is in line to produce No. 1 running back numbers in 2007.
FANTASY INSIGHT: In James' first season with the Cardinals he averaged a paltry 3.4 yards per carry and a case can be made that running backs are a product of the offensive scheme they work in -- and the talent on the line blocking for them. There isn't a running back in the league that should have their longest carry from scrimmage under 20 yards, but that is exactly what James did in 2006. His longest carry was 18 yards, That said, the change in offensive philosophy goes from West Coast Denny Green to a run-first scheme under new HC Ken Whisenhunt is a positive for James. Add in the fact that this years Cardinal offensive line is more talented and showed significant improvement over the last month of the '06 season. Case in point was James running for three 100-yard games and three touchdowns in December. All of these mentions make James a solid No. 2 RB option on draft day.
| | James, Edgerrin - RB - Ari 2007-07-27 14:43:00 In Arizona, veteran RB Edgerrin James is expected to be the featured piece in head coach Russ Grimm's offense, but his success will come down to how much the underperforming offensive line learns from their new head coach. |
