Team behind Beckett: Boston Red Sox (47-25)
Team behind Peavy: San Diego Padres (41-31)
Interesting fact: Oddsmakers have set the total at an extremely low 7, with two dominant pitchers set to take the mound.
Line: -126, 7
Burning Question: Will Beckett be the first pitcher to reach 11 wins, or can Peavy pull level with him by notching win No. 10? Josh Beckett (10-1, 3.14 ERA)
Josh Beckett moved up a day in the rotation for Sunday's start against the Padres after teammate Curt Schilling went on the disabled list with a shoulder problem after his last start against the Braves.
Beckett
will still go on his normal four days rest (due to a Red Sox off day on
Thursday) as he aims to become the first pitcher in the majors to reach
11 wins this season.
In his last start, the right-hander
recovered well from his first loss of the season by pitching six
shutout innings against Atlanta. He allowed only four runs and struck
out three in a 4-0 Sox win.
Beckett has an impressive 5-0
record with a 1.59 ERA on the road this season and is 4-1 with a 2.14
ERA against San Diego in his career.
Jake Peavy (9-1, 1.98 ERA)
Tied with Brad Penny for the most wins in the National League, Jake Peavy faces the Red Sox looking for his 10th win of the season.
Peavy was not at his best in his most recent start, giving up six hits and three earned runs in six innings of work against the Baltimore Orioles. The Padres came out 12-6 winners in that game, but Peavy’s ERA rose to 1.98.
Peavy
has not brought his best stuff in recent weeks and two of his last four
starts have been no-decisions. But he still managed to strike out 25
batters over those four games to add to his impressive tally of 110 Ks
in 15 starts this season.
This is the right-hander's first outing
against the Red Sox, but in Peavy’s last 13 interleague starts, San
Diego has a 9-4 record. The Padres are 8-1 in Peavy’s last nine starts.
