When the smoke cleared from one of the most exciting Super Bowls in years, the betting public at Sportsbook.com enjoyed an extremely successful day. Early
bettors pounded the underdog Giants from the time the line was released
nearly two weeks ago, thanks to New York's ability to cover the spread
on the road and the Patriots' recent slide against the spread. Although
much of the late money came in on the Patriots, about 64 percent of the
money was still on the Giants come kickoff.
Covering the
12-point line was never really in doubt throughout this game for the
Giants and New York moneyline bettors cashed in when Eli Manning hit
Plaxico Burress in the end zone with 35 seconds left. You may have
heard by now - the Giants won the game 17-14.
Now the question
is, will New England suffer the dreaded Super Bowl hangover next
season? Only one of the last seven Super Bowl runners-up was able to
make the playoffs the following year (2006 Seahawks).
Sportsbook.com
has made the Patriots the 5-2 favorites to win Super Bowl XLIII despite
the issues they'll have to address during the off-season. Those include
whether they'll resign Randy Moss,
the spygate controversy and a corps of aging linebackers. Even if the
Patriots come back to earth next season, you have to think they are a
shoe-in for the playoffs considering their weak competition in the AFC
East.
Although the Patriots have forfeited their first round
pick in April’s draft, they own the No. 7 pick overall thanks to a
trade with San Francisco last year.
