Greg says Calgary, with three games this week, is a team to watch. |
With the first two weeks of the season in the books, there have been many surprises. The Chicago Blackhawks has already knocked off the Detroit Red Wings twice this season, and what more can you say about the start of goaltender Niklas Backstrom of the Minnesota Wild? On the other hand, some things never go out of style. Toronto Maple Leaf forwards still don't know the meaning of the word “back-check,” and it seems Atlanta hasn’t realized the season has started.
Last week four teams played four games, which made it a bit easier for fantasy owners to set their line-ups. This week poses no such luxury. 18 teams play three games this week with the remaining 12 playing two games apiece, so there are many things to consider when filling out your line-up.
Most Games
Three — Anaheim, Atlanta, Buffalo, Calgary, Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Detroit, Florida, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Toronto, Vancouver.
With the schedule being so balanced this week you will have to consider match-ups in order to get the most out of your fantasy team. The Calgary Flames have a very favourable schedule this week playing Los Angeles and Edmonton at home, as well as Colorado on the road. Alex Tanguay has gotten off to a slow start having not yet recorded a goal, but should factor in well against the Kings, who have allowed 22 goals in their current four-game losing streak.
The Buffalo Sabres are another team that should be licking their chops this week. Home games against Toronto and Columbus, as well as a road game against Montreal's lacklustre defence should provide easy pickings for the speedy Buffalo forwards. Brian Campbell has nine points already in this young season and should sparkle on the power play against Toronto and Montreal — two teams whose penalty killing units have gotten off to slow starts. Forwards Thomas Vanek, Derek Roy, and Maxim Afinogenov should give Toronto's slow defence fits. It would be shocking if they didn't score more than five goals against a terrible Leaf defence.
Fewest Games
Two — Boston, Carolina, Dallas, Edmonton, Nashville, Islanders, Rangers, Ottawa, Phoenix, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Washington.
The Ottawa Senators are the obvious first choice among the teams playing two games this week. Home games against Florida and Montreal should be easy pickings for the Sens, who have gotten off to a 6-1 start. Martin Gerber has been fantastic, posting a 5-1 record with a 1.99 GAA through six games this season. Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson have combined for 11 goals and 30 points thus far this season. Look for them to continue their scoring ways.
The Tampa Bay Lightning’s schedule this week is also eye-catching. A home game against Atlanta and a road game against the Boston look very promising for Bolts owners. Vaclav Prospal has gotten off to a great start, scoring five goals in his first five games, and Johan Holmqvist has provided Tampa with solid goaltending, going 3-0 with a 2.38 GAA. Martin St. Louis has no goals so far this season, but could capitalize on an Atlanta team which is second-last in penalty killing and is surrendering nearly five goals a game.

Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks
Anaheim looks to settle the score against the Red Wings, who downed the Ducks in the Wings’ season opener, 3-2 in a shootout. Anaheim is looking to get back on track after beating the Bruins 2-1. The Ducks will need to rely on youngsters Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Chris Kunitz if they are to have any hope against a Detroit offence led by Henrik Zetterberg, who has 12 points in his first six games.

Carolina Hurricanes at Philadelphia Flyers
This game should be outstanding between two teams out to fast starts this season. Carolina is off to a 4-1-1 start and is atop of the Southeast division. Carolina possesses perhaps the most depth at forward of any team and could put a few in against a questionable Philly defence. Daniel Briere and Simon Gagne will lead the charge against Carolina, both getting off to great starts. Carolina does play Friday against Pittsburgh and could be fatigued coming into Philly.
