A Wild Week...
  Henrik Lundvist -- Fantasy Hockey
22 shots, 22 stopped for Henrik Lundvist this week when he faced off with the Devils this week.

It turns out the Minnesota Wild are mortal after all – you just have to get them away from home. On Wednesday, Minnesota suffered their first regulation loss of the season in Calgary, as Alex Tanguay scored the tying and winning goals to rally the Flames from a 3-0 first-period deficit. The goals were the first and second of the season for Tanguay, who also scored his third goal of the season in an overtime loss to Colorado. The Wild rebounded to earn a point in Edmonton on Thursday, as Minnesota lost a shootout to the Oilers. Wild backup goalie Josh Harding allowed four goals to the Oilers, by far his least impressive performance after shutting out the Ducks and allowing just one goal to the Blues. Minnesota dropped their third game of the week on Sunday, as the Avalanche defeated the Wild 3-1 behind 21 saves from Peter Budaj. Harding started again due to a groin injury to starter Niklas Backstrom, and stopped 27 of 30 shots, but it was not enough for Minnesota.

As bad as the Wild were this week, the Columbus Blue Jackets were equally good. Columbus won all three of their games this week, starting things off with a 7-4 win over the Blackhawks. Rick Nash and Jiri Novotny scored two goals each against Chicago, and Mike Peca tallied three assists. Blackhawks phenom Patrick Kane did manage four more points in the game, but Nikolai Khabibulin allowed six goals on 25 shots and the Hawks could never get the game tied up. Columbus then returned home and shut out the Blues 3-0 as Novotny and Nash scored again and Pascal Leclaire stopped all 36 shots that came his way.  Nash’s goal will be a staple on highlight reels at the end of the season – he fed the puck through his legs and then lifted it over the goalie’s shoulder. Columbus earned their third straight win against the Sharks, as Sergei Fedorov (remember him?) scored the go-ahead goal near the end of the second period and the Jackets’ defense held San Jose to just five shots in the third period to preserve the lead.

The New Jersey Devils started this season on the road, and played their first nine games away from home as the finishing touches were applied to their new arena – the Prudential Center (not Centre) located in downtown Newark. The Devils left behind their old arena at the Meadowlands but couldn’t win their first game in their new building, as the Senators handed them a 4-1 loss. The Devils went 3-5-1 on their nine-game road trip to start the season, and looked anything but road-weary in outshooting the Senators 18-5 in the first period, but Martin Gerber turned aside all 18 shots. The teams traded goals in the second period before the Senators exploded for three goals in the third – Chris Kelly scored the game-winner, Mike Fisher scored the second, and Daniel Alfredsson scored an empty-netter to finish the scoring. At 3-6-1, the Devils are tied with the Rangers for last place in the Atlantic Division, but they will stay home this week to face Tampa Bay and Toronto in hopes of finding their first win in their new building.

One of the Devils’ losses came as a welcome relief to their neighbors across the Hudson River – the New York Rangers beat the Devils 2-0 as Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 22 shots that he faced. Little-known winger Nigel Dawes scored both goals for the Rangers, who were desperate for any kind of offense after being shut out 1-0 by Marc-Andre Fleury and the Penguins. The Rangers also lost 4-1 to the Leafs on Saturday, giving them just three goals in their last four games. Jaromir Jagr did finally manage his first goal of the season (the Rangers’ lone goal against Toronto) but the Rangers’ total of 16 goals is still the lowest in the NHL.

While the Rangers’ struggles on offense might be the biggest story in the East, the red-hot Blue Jackets have some competition in the Western Conference. The Los Angeles Kings have also won four straight games, including a 2-1 win over Dallas that was their first victory over the Stars in 10 tries. Jason LaBarbera stopped 17 shots against Nashville for a 6-0 win, and then stopped 29 of 30 against Dallas and 34 of 35 against the Oilers. Centre Michael Cammalleri scored two goals against the Predators, bringing his total to 10 goals on the season, which leads the NHL. Cammalleri and Anze Kopitar lead the Kings with 13 points on the season. The Kings are tied for the NHL lead with 12 games played, and also share the league lead with five wins at home.

Before I go, here is a list of all the teams that are still undefeated at home (or, in one case, on the road). The Kings are not on the list, but they are still an impressive 5-3-0 at home.

  1. Philadelphia Flyers, 4-0-0 at home

  2. Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-0-1 at home

  3. Minnesota Wild, 4-0-0 at home

  4. Colorado Avalanche, 5-0-0 at home

  5. Dallas Stars, 3-0-1 at home

  6. Ottawa Senators, 4-0-0 on the road
