Jagr in a groove on new line

Rumors, moves, injuries and newsmakers...
Jagr in
a groove on new line; Smyth carried off ice on stretcher; Price leads
Habs to top spot in East; Biron solidifies hold on No. 1 status in
Philly; Are Leafs after Burke?; Hossa should be back in a week; and
more...
AVALANCHE
Colorado may be without Ryan Smyth
for a while after the veteran forward was injured in a scary incident
on Saturday. Smyth was labeled into the glass by Kings defenseman Jack Johnson
and had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher. The Avalanche told
the Associated Press that Smyth was conscious and able to walk, but he
was still taken to a Denver hospital to be safe. The former Edmonton
star had scored two goals in the game before the injury. Colorado won
the game 5-2.
BRUINS
Boston rookie David Krejci
scored a goal in his third consecutive game on Saturday, helping the
Bruins down the Thrashers in a 3-2 shootout win. The three goals scored
by Krejci are the first three of his NHL career. The 21-year-old Czech
forward also has 13 assists on the season. The sudden goal surge could
be an indication of great things to come for the talented youngster.
CANADIENS
Montreal's
2-1 win over New Jersey on Saturday propelled the Canadiens into
first-place overall in the Eastern Conference. Rookie goalie Carey Price
was once again on top of his game, stopping 31 of 32 shots sent his way
on the night. Since becoming the Habs No. 1 goalie last week when Cristobal Huet
was dealt to the Capitals, Price has gone 3-0 and allowed a total of
just four goals. It's already looking like Montreal GM Bob Gainey was
right to put so much trust in the 20-year-old phenom.
CAPITALS
New acquisition Cristobal Huet
recorded a shutout in his first game with the Capitals on Friday as
Washington rolled over New Jersey 4-0. Despite the impressive showing,
Washington coach Bruce Boudreau opted to go with Olaf Kolzig
between the pipes on Saturday against Toronto. The long-time Capitals
netminder wasn't particularly sharp, allowing three goals on 25 shots
as the Leafs emerged with a 3-2 victory. Boudreau will likely use the
remainder of the season as a prolonged audition for the No. 1
goaltending job in 2008-09. Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin snapped a seven-game goal drought on Saturday by scoring his 49th goal of the season in the loss.
FLYERS
Philadelphia goalie Martin Biron
appears to have his mojo back. After a tough stretch in February, the
veteran netminder won his third consecutive game on Saturday, making 33
saves in the Flyers' 4-1 win over the Islanders. The solid showing by
Biron appears to have cemented his status as the team's No. 1 goalie
over Antero Niittymaki. Biron allowed only five goals in the three wins.
HURRICANES
Forward Sergei Samsonov
continued his remarkable season turnaround on Saturday, scoring a pair
of goals and adding an assist in the Hurricanes' 5-1 rout of the
Lightning. The Russian sniper now has 21 points (11-10-21) in 24 games
with Carolina. The Hurricanes claimed the speedy winger off of waivers
in January after the Blackhawks dumped him. In 23 games with Chicago
early this season, Samsonov managed only four assists.
MAPLE LEAFS
According to Canadian broadcaster TSN, Toronto is prepared to offer
Anaheim executive Brain Burke the duel position of President and GM of
the Maple Leafs. Due to tampering rules, Toronto is not allowed to talk
to Burke about the job until his team is finished playing in 2007-08.
On the surface, leaving the reigning Stanley Cup champions to take over
the broken down Leafs seems like a no-win situation. However, Burke
would likely demand absolute autonomy over all hockey-related
decisions, much like Raptors President/GM Bryan Colangelo enjoys with
Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment's other big property. Additionally,
Burke, who has no shortage of ego, definitely understands that bringing
a championship to Cup-starved Toronto would give him a special place in
hockey history.
PENGUINS
Everyone in Pittsburgh is breathing a lot easier after learning that Marian Hossa's
knee injury is not serious. The Associated Press reports that Hossa
suffered a first degree sprain in his knee-on-knee collision with
Boston's Glen Murray
this past week. The team is hoping the 29-year-old forward will be back
in uniform in less than a week. Without Hossa on Saturday, Evgeni Malkin was once again the star for the Penguins, scoring a goal and adding two assists in a 5-4 loss to the Senators.
RANGERS
Since forming a line six games ago, Jaromir Jagr, Sean Avery and Brandon Dubinsky
have been an unstoppable force for the Rangers. The trio has combined
for 24 points in those contests. Normally a sniper, Jagr has been the
playmaker for the group, contributing seven assists to go with his two
goals. Avery has been at his annoying best, particularly when scoring
five goals and adding two helpers. Dubinsky rounds out the group with a
well-balanced four goals and four assists. The big output by the line
has helped the Blueshirts win five of the six games. They'll go looking
for another victory on Sunday when they face the Flyers, winners of
three straight themselves.
RED WINGS
Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom
told the Detroit News that he could be back in the lineup by mid-March,
refuting the many rumors swirling around that have suggested he may be
done for the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury. While
fellow rearguards Brian Rafalski (groin) and Chris Chelios (knee) remain sidelined, the news is not all bad for the Wings on the blueline. Niklas Kronwall returned from a 13-game absence on Friday and chipped in two assists in Detroit's 3-2 loss to San Jose. New acquisition Brad Stuart also made his presence felt, delivering a team-high five hits in the contest.
SENATORS
Ottawa snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Pittsburgh 5-4. Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson
led the way with two goals and an assist. It was only the third victory
for Ottawa in their past 10 games. Bryan Murray picked up his first win
since firing John Paddock this week and taking over the coaching reins.
