NFL Mock Draft, Round One

We're about two weeks away from the biggest job interview for the top collegiate football players in the country, the NFL Scouting Combine. This is a place where NFL front office personnel gather to evaluate this year's top talent in hopes of either turning around their franchise or continuing a winning program.

As the Combine approaches there will be talk about what teams need and which players fit. Prospects will go through drills that will be evaluated like no other practice they've ever been through. For these players, they're competing for their professional lives.

If you have any questions regarding my latest mock draft, feel free to email me at: csteuber@nfldraftpro.com.

Quick note: My next mock draft will be posted after the Scouting Combine.

QB

JaMarcus Russell

LSU

The Raiders just hired Lane Kiffin to be the  team’s new head coach, and what better way to start a new era than with a new franchise quarterback. Obviously the Raiders have a decision to make, and   that decision becomes clearer after the Scouting Combine and individual  Pro-Days, but at the moment, the choice is between LSU’s JaMarcus Russell and Notre Dame’s Brady Quinn. At this time, the right pick is Russell.

QB

Brady Quinn

Notre Dame

Sr.

6-4

227

The Lions have a tough decision to make at this   selection. Do they take a possible franchise quarterback in Brady Quinn? Do   they upgrade their offensive line with the selection of Joe Thomas? What   about their defensive line? Calvin Johnson is still on the board, but the Lions have been burned by previous receiver selections. In the end, the Lions   may trade down, but in this mock draft I have them taking Quinn.

3

RB

Adrian Peterson

Oklahoma

Jr.

6-2

218

II keep going back and forth on what the Browns will do in this position. In my last mock draft I had the Browns taking   Michigan DT Alan Branch. But in my three previous mocks, I had them taking   Oklahoma’s star running back Adrian Peterson. Recently I’ve been hearing that  the Browns are very interested in Peterson   and if he’s available to them at this position they will draft him.

4

WR

Calvin Johnson

Georgia Tech

Jr.

6-5

235

There are some great players available to the Buccaneers and they have some major holes. Offensively, the Buccaneers have   to consider that Joey Galloway is getting older and he’s battled some   injuries throughout his career, so a player like Calvin Johnson is very intriguing. I could go on, but it wouldn’t be necessary, because Johnson’s talent is superior and he   provides quarterback Chris Simms with a major weapon.

5

OT

Joe Thomas

Wisconsin

Sr.

6-8

313

Arizona is an interesting team, because they have a lot of firepower on offense, but don’t have much on the offensive line   to protect it. Their defense is young and is improving, but they need to   establish a more consistent pass rush. There are some nice pass rushers on   the board, but with Wisconsin's big man, Joe Thomas on the board, his talent is too much to pass up.

6

DE

Jamaal Anderson

Arkansas

Jr.

6-6

280

With Jamaal Anderson, Gaines Adams and Alan  Branch available to the Redskins, there is a major decision to be made. The   Redskins need to create a pass rush and could use an effective sack artist to   accomplish that goal. After watching Anderson   this past season at Arkansas, he has unlimited potential and will only get   better.

7

WR

Dwayne Jarrett

USC

Jr.

6-5

210

Head coach Brad Childress is an offensive mind and will always look to upgrade his offense. Last year, the Vikings drafted   Tarvaris Jackson to be their future quarterback and that future may start   this season. The Vikings know in order for Jackson to be successful they need   to provide him with some weapons. Adding a tall receiver like Dwayne Jarrett to go along with Troy Williamson makes the Vikings much better.

8

DT

Alan Branch

Michigan

Jr.

6-6

331

The Texans are a team building for their future. They are building an excellent foundation on defense, and had a great   draft last season with the selections of Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans. The   offense is still a work in progress and could use some help, but with a   monstrous defensive tackle on the board in Michigan’s Alan Branch, the Texans can’t pass up the addition of Branch,  who can immediately help Williams on the defensive line.
