NFL Mock Draft, Round One (cont)
We're
about two weeks away from the biggest job interview for the top collegiate football
players in the country, the NFL Scouting Combine. This is a place where NFL
front office personnel gather to evaluate this year's top talent in hopes of
either turning around their franchise or continuing a winning program.
As the
Combine approaches there will be talk about what teams need and which players
fit. Prospects will go through drills that will be evaluated like no other
practice they've ever been through. For these players, they're competing for
their professional lives.
If
you have any questions regarding my latest mock draft, feel free to email me
at: csteuber@nfldraftpro.com.
Quick note: My next mock draft will be posted
after the Scouting Combine.

Hiring former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron as the teams new head coach, the Dolphins must decide what area needs to improve. The most glaring area of need is on the defensive line,
especially at defensive tackle. With Branch drafted by Houston, the next best tackle available is Louisville’s Amobi Okoye. It may be a little high to reach for Okoye, but with Gaines Adams available... he's the pick. |

The Falcons need to improve their pass defense. DeAngelo Hall is a great shutdown cornerback, but he needs more help in the secondary. Lawyer Milloy is 33-years old and Chris Crocker is a serviceable safety, which ultimately means drafting a sure-handed safety of the future wouldn’t hurt. LaRon Landry is the choice.

Being one of the up-and-coming offenses in the league, the San Francisco 49ers have one of the best young quarterbacks in the game with Alex Smith at the helm. They also have an emerging running back in Frank Gore. The one ingredient they're missing is a game-breaking receiver that can change a
game. Drafting Ted Ginn, Jr. gives San Francisco a special treat on offense and special teams. |

The Bills are an interesting team that is on the way up. They may look to upgrade at offensive tackle, but taking a tackle like Levi Brown
at this position may be a bit of a reach. Florida State’s Lawrence Timmons is
another option for Buffalo. Middle linebacker London Fletcher is a free agent and it appears he may not return to Buffalo. With that said, Ole Miss linebacker Patrick Willis makes sense with this selection.

The Rams are always known for their offense and not so much for their defense. There are some nice options on the board at this point like Adam Carriker, Amobi Okoye, Reggie Nelson, and Leon Hall. The Rams may look
to upgrade their secondary, but a great pass rush helps a secondary. A player like Cariker
will draw comparisons to a former Rams player, Grant Wistrom... and he's ultimately the pick.

The Panthers have one of the best defenses in the league, when
they’re healthy. But one area of their defense that has been a concern is the play of the safeties. In 2005, the Panthers thought they solved their problem at safety when they drafted Thomas Davis in the first round. When Davis was
brought in, they found out he was more effective at linebacker. This year the Panthers get it right with Florida's Reggie Nelson.

With new head coach Mike Tomlin and the Steelers tradition of having tough defensive teams, you can almostguarantee they will draft a defensive player. The one position that needs an infusion of youth is at
linebacker. Three of the four starting linebackers are 30-years of age or older. Drafting a young, athletic linebacker will benefit the Steelers now and in the future. Florida State’s Lawrence Timmons is the perfect fit. |

Green Bay is an interesting situation. With Brett Favre coming back and a young defense that’s learning to play the game, they must decide what direction to focus on. Is Aaron Rodgers the future? Possibly, but with
Ahman Green becoming less effective, he’s going to need a reliable running back to help take pressure off of him. Lynch is a steal for the Packers.
