NFL Mock Draft, Round One (cont)
We're
about two weeks away from the biggest job interview for the top collegiate football
players in the country, the NFL Scouting Combine. This is a place where NFL
front office personnel gather to evaluate this year's top talent in hopes of
either turning around their franchise or continuing a winning program.
As the
Combine approaches there will be talk about what teams need and which players
fit. Prospects will go through drills that will be evaluated like no other
practice they've ever been through. For these players, they're competing for
their professional lives.
If
you have any questions regarding my latest mock draft, feel free to email me
at: csteuber@nfldraftpro.com.
Quick note: My next mock draft will be posted
after the Scouting Combine.

The Jaguars could use some depth along the defensive line and at linebacker. The safety position is a concern, especially with the injuries Donovan Darius has suffered. Florida’s Reggie Nelson was one player the
Jaguars loved, but with Nelson off the board, they decide to opt for a defensive end. The Jaguars decide to draft one of Nelson's teammates,
defensive end Jarvis Moss.

It’s nice if you can score points in the NFL, but the game gets hard when you give up more than you can score. This is what the Bengals dealt with this past season. The secondary of the Bengals is a major concern, as
the opposition has a field day passing against the Cincy defense. But if there were a good pass rush, there wouldn’t be as much pressure on the defensive backs. Enter 20-year old Amobi Okoye.

One of the most surprising teams of 2006, the Titans have a bright future with Vince Young at the helm. Adding weapons around Young is a must and what better way to do that than adding a player you’re familiar
with. Tennessee Vols receiver Robert Meachem had a breakout year this past season, with over 1,300 yards receiving. The Titans are hoping they found a player to match with Young.

The Giants have many areas of concern on defense and want to address them in the draft. They need some help at linebacker and in the secondary. Looking at the board, the Giants have to be pleasantly surprised
to see Michigan’s Leon Hall still available. Hall’s fall is due to his questionable size and speed, but the Giants like his leadership qualities and select the former Wolverine.

When you look at the Broncos defensive line, you see some deficiencies. At defensive end, adding an upgrade over Ebenezer Ekuban and
Kenard Lang is a high priority. With the pass rushing of Elvis Dumervil and
now adding another explosive pass rusher in Georgia’s Charles Johnson, the Broncos have a young up-and-coming pass rush for offenses to fear.

The Cowboys hired former San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to replace Bill Parcells. With the team searching
for a new identity, one thing is certain, Tony Romo is going to be the
future. The Cowboys have some concerns in their secondary, but this draft is deep with defensive backs and they decide to wait until the second round. The offensive line needs help and Levi Brown is the answer.

It seems like the Kansas City Chiefs have had the same problem
for the last few years, they don’t have another receiving weapon outside of
Tony Gonzalez. For their offense to be complete, they need a game-breaker at wide receiver. They already have a great running game and Gonzalez commanding
the middle of the field, but a player like Sidney Rice or Dwayne Bowe adds a
lot to this offense. In the end, Rice is the selection.

The Patriots are always a great team that some way, some how
finds a way to win no matter who’s on the field. The question about the
Patriots has to begin with the health of Rodney Harrison. He’s their
emotional leader and is one of the best safeties in the league. But his
injuries are becoming more frequent and a future replacement is necessary. Texas safety Michael Griffin is an excellent choice for the Patriots.
