NFL Mock Draft, Round One (cont)

We're about two weeks away from the biggest job interview for the top collegiate football players in the country, the NFL Scouting Combine. This is a place where NFL front office personnel gather to evaluate this year's top talent in hopes of either turning around their franchise or continuing a winning program.

As the Combine approaches there will be talk about what teams need and which players fit. Prospects will go through drills that will be evaluated like no other practice they've ever been through. For these players, they're competing for their professional lives.

If you have any questions regarding my latest mock draft, feel free to email me at: csteuber@nfldraftpro.com.

Quick note: My next mock draft will be posted after the Scouting Combine.

The Jets are an up-and-coming team with their new head coach Eric Mangini at the helm. With some concerns at certain positions, the Jets must identify their most pressing need. Obviously, when you look at the Jets,   you see that they need some help in their secondary. Justin Miller is a dynamic special teams player that struggles on defense. Drafting Pittsburgh's Darrelle Revis allows Miller to play in nickel situations.

One area that the Eagles might identify is in the secondary. It appears safety Michael Lewis will leave the Eagles as a free agent and leave a hole in the secondary. Since Texas’ Michael Griffin is not available, the   Eagles will turn to Griffin’s former teammate Aaron Ross. Ross is a big defensive back that could play as a cornerback or a safety. He’s   also a very reliable kick returner, which is something the Eagles are looking   for.

he Saints proved they could score points this year. They have an explosive offense, but just like the Bengals, the Saints give up a lot of points. Veterans Hollis Thomas and Bryan Young are good, but an upgrade is   something the Saints should consider. Also the secondary is mediocre at best and adding a cornerback is another possibility. But with a player by the name of "Tank" on the board, the Saints go with Tyler.

After addressing one need, with the addition of safety Michael Griffin, the Patriots will look to sure up another defensive position,  linebacker. With Tedi Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Larry Izzo, and Rosevelt Colvin   getting a little older, a youth movement at the position is necessary.  Drafting a tough, instinctive player like Penn State’s Paul Posluszny fits the mold Bill Belichick looks for in a linebacker.

OT/G

Justin Blalock

Texas

The Ravens are known for their defense, but their offense is what holds them back from being a dominant team. The addition of Steve McNair during last off-season helped the team become more effective on offense, but   an upgrade at certain positions is needed. The offensive line needs some help, especially with some linemen being free agents. Adding a versatile lineman like Texas’ Justin Blalock will help the Ravens on   offense.

WR

Dwayne Bowe

LSU

It’s obvious that the Chargers have to add some weapons around   Phillip Rivers. Having LaDainian Tomlinson is great and he’s the best running back in the league, and Antonio Gates is one of the best tight ends in the   league, but they need a deep threat. There are some good receivers in the draft and the Chargers choose the emerging LSU wide out Dwayne Bowe.

DE/OLB

Anthony Spencer

Purdue

Sr.

6-3

After losing the Super Bowl to the Colts, the Bears must get down to business. It’s obvious that Rex Grossman is still a work in progress, and there are some serious doubts that he will become a quality quarterback.   So, do the Bears draft a quarterback at this position? I don’t see it. A bigger question is, “Do the Bears resign Lance Briggs?” If Briggs walks,  drafting Purdue's versatile defender Anthony Spencer eases the pain.

OLB

Jon Beason

Miami

Jr.

6-0

Indianapolis has a major decision this off-season. Do they resign one of their major playmakers, linebacker Cato June? Or, do they allow him to sign with another team? If the Colts decide to allow June to walk, don’t be   surprised if they draft a linebacker at this selection. The Colts decide to select Miami Hurricanes star linebacker, Jon Beason.
