NFL Mock Draft -- Updated March 2, 2007
REVISED:
Combine Ends, Draft Winds Stir
By
Chris Steuber
Thursday, March 2, 2007
After posting my latest mock draft yesterday, I felt very
comfortable with the selection I had made. However, after the Detroit Lions and
Denver Broncos pulled off a major trade, which will be official later today,
the top-ten has been altered.
With Dre' Bly going to
Denver and RB Tatum Bell and OT George Foster heading to Detroit, the Lions are
no longer in need of an offensive tackle; ruling out the possibility of
drafting Wisconsin's Joe Thomas.
This trade moves Brady Quinn back into the number-two spot, where I've had him
all along. There is the slight possibility of the Lions drafting Calvin
Johnson. I don't see how they can draft another wide receiver in the first
round, but we're talking about the Lions, so anything is possible.
So, enjoy my revised mock and let me know your thoughts. We’re about two months
away from the biggest off-season spectacle in professional sports.

The Raiders have to identify a franchise
quarterback, but there’s also the temptation of Calvin Johnson. If the
Raiders select Johnson, who will be throwing him the ball? With the recent
release of Aaron Brooks, the Raiders starting quarterback, at the moment, is
Andrew Walter. Obviously Walter isn’t the answer so the selection of JaMarcus
Russell is an easy one for the Raiders.

After having Brady Quinn at this selection in
all of my previous mock drafts, the one time I go against my instinct it
blows up in my face. The Lions traded Dre’ Bly to Denver
in exchange for RB Tatum Bell and OT George Foster. This trade helps Detroit’s offensive line
and ultimately rules out Joe Thomas ending up in Motown… Welcome to Detroit Mr. Quinn.

After watching the combine and all the players
projected to be in the top-ten, there were a few standouts from the bunch and
Adrian Peterson was one of them. The Browns need to improve their running
game and Peterson appears to be the answer for Cleveland.

With Brady Quinn off the board and the Bucs needing an offensive threat, drafting a player like Calvin Johnson is just what Tampa Bay needs. Offensive tackle Joe Thomas is a possibility, but Johnson is a once in a decade receiver and his talent is too good to pass on.

The Cardinals benefit from the trade that was
made between Detroit and Denver, and land the player they coveted
the most – offensive tackle Joe Thomas. Thomas
gives Arizona
an upgrade from Leonard Davis and a player with a high ceiling. I am sure
Matt Leinart is smiling over this selection.

Washington has to be thrilled
that Arizona
passed on Adams, a player who openly stated he’d love to play for the
Redskins. Adams provides the ‘Skins
with a freakish defensive end that can get after the quarterback and drop
back in coverage if needed.

The Vikings have many needs and some are more
glaring than others. Obviously, Minnesota
needs to add a receiver, but in a deep receiving class they feel they can
wait until round two. With a potentially dominant defensive end on the board,
in Arkansas’
Jamaal Anderson, the Vikings look to improve their pass rush and
select the former SEC sack leader.

The Texans remind me of a young Chicago Bears
team. They have a developing defense that features some nice young talent
with a lot of speed, but they lack some offensive firepower and a steady
offensive line. The problem is they can’t fix everything with one pick, but
they can improve their offense and special teams with one player… Ohio State’s
Ted Ginn, Jr. is this years Devin Hester.
