The biggest surprise selection of the first round, the Dolphins passed on a potential franchise quarterback in Brady Quinn for Ted Ginn |
First Round Breakdown & Day-One Notes

This
was the craziest and longest first round I can ever remember. There was
a lot of movement and surprises that occurred during the first round,
especially the fact Brady Quinn fell to the 22nd overall selection.
Ironically, Quinn was drafted by the team I projected him to be
selected by with the third overall pick the Cleveland Browns. For
thoughts on day-one of the NFL Draft, click here.
Here’s how the first round unfolded and you can see where I projected these players to be selected:

Thoughts: This was the obvious selection
for the Raiders. Drafting Russell gives the Raiders a new direction and a
marquee name to represent their franchise.

Calvin Johnson

Thoughts: I am a little surprised that the
Lions decided to keep this selection and pick another receiver, but when you
have a talent like Calvin Johnson on the board, you have to take him. Johnson
and Roy Williams form one of the best receiving tandems in the National
Football League.

Thoughts: Personally, I would have selected
Brady Quinn, but adding Thomas upgrades the Browns offensive line. Thomas
gives the Browns a potential All-Pro lineman, but he will have his ups and
downs as a rookie.

Thoughts: This was a shocking pick in many
aspects. If I were the Cardinals I would have tried to trade out of this pick
and move down. Drafting Brown fills a need, but selecting him fifth overall
was a reach and they may end up regretting this selection.

|
Thoughts: The Redskins made a great
selection with adding LaRon Landry to their
secondary. Landry becomes an instant leader on defense and a player that will
command respect immediately. Landry and Sean Taylor form the best safety
tandem in the National Football League.

Adrian Peterson

|
Thoughts: This was a case of selecting the
best player available and the Minnesota Vikings get a potential impact player
in Adrian Peterson. There are questions about Peterson’s health, but if he’s
healthy this is a quality selection for the Vikings.

Thoughts: The Falcons needed a defensive
end, since they lost Patrick Kerney in the
off-season, but I was surprised new head coach Bobby Petrino passed up DT Amobi Okoye. Petrino coached Okoye at
Louisville
and I thought it would have been
a perfect fit, but
Anderson
fills an immediate need.

Thoughts: The biggest surprise selection of
the first round, the Dolphins passed on a potential franchise quarterback in
Brady Quinn for Ted Ginn. When healthy, Ginn is a game breaker who has great ability to score
every time he touches the ball. But I can’t believe the Dolphins drafted him
ninth overall. The Dolphins may regret this pick for many years.
